98 4runner - What color is you key fob?

I'm trying to get a definitive answer on what color key fob was used on a 98 4runner with the RS3000 keyless entry. What color remote do you have?

I have a port installed RS3000. See my point exactly. The first two post contradict each other. Who is correct? There was another post here lastnight where the guy said 3rd gen 4runners have never had grey remotes but he deleted his post.

Well, Toyota says 1996-97 = black
and 1998-1999 = grey.

(This for dealer-installed RS3000 only.The factory-installed wireless in 1999 and after was black. No factory systems before that.))

If I were you, I'd bet on grey.

Maybe they used an old-stock RS3000 on [MENTION=142080]Bluecobra[/MENTION] . I don't know if that is even possible. Or maybe it is aftermarket.

Are you buying a genuine OEM Toyota key fob? If so and your truck is a 1998, then you do need the gray fob — NOT the black.

If you look at the picture below of the TSB (Toyota Service Bulletin) put out by Toyota in 1999, they specifically state that starting with the 1998 Model Year, the fob have a different coding logic (whatever that is) and are gray in color.

This obviously doesn't apply to aftermarket fobs and to be honest, I wouldn't waste my time or money on aftermarket fobs.

The only exception is if your 4Runner was originally from the gulf states. That would mean you need a Securikey remote.
 
I got the grey one so we'll see then. I just got through searching a few threads here and each one says something different.

Not sure if this helps. 1998 limited. Black key fob.


I recently broke the fob housing and got a replacement shell for $15 on eBay.


Edit. Original OEM. Jeez just trying to help.

I would take lightly all the anecdotal evidence provided since nobody actually stated whether their fobs are OEM or aftermarket...or altered even.

The Durk and I both provided TSBs stating that 98 and later fobs are gray in color. I personally would rest easy with that info if you purchased a replacement OEM fob and not some aftermarket junk off eBay.
 
Yeah, mine is black and it is a 98, however it is a very early 98 that was purchased in 97 by the original owner. Maybe it was a leftover ?
 
1998 4Runner LTD, only 94k original miles here. Just called 2 Toyota Dealers and the original key fob part # is PT398-07101. Google it and tons will come up. :trophy:

How do I know if my RS3000 still works? My truck came with a crappy aftermarket Viper alarm that I hate. I want to disable the Viper, get original fobs, and use the original RS3000 system, but I'm not sure it's still operable.

And secondarily,

Is it as easy as getting disabling the Viper, getting new OEM fobs, and reprogramming them? Or can I use the OEM fobs with the viper alarm?
 
1997 Limited, both key fobs are black with 2 buttons each. My alarm is starting to act up, sometimes doors won’t lock, other times it makes no sound.

Sorry for the bump, but I'm not sure where to look to see if my '98 limited can use a keyfob or not. Where should I look/what should I look for?
If so, where can I find a fob for sale?

Look under the drivers seat. If you see a black box, you've got the "port installed" RS3000. Also, you should see something on the center console that says security.

I also have a '98 Limited and did get a working fob (grey) as the old service bulletin calls for. However, the system in mine must have other issues since I can't pair the fob to the box. I'll send you the fob for what I have in it if you're interested - $25

I also have the 27 page PDF version of the RS3000 owners manual and the electrical diagram if you want that.

Thanks! I'll take the owners manual, but I'll have to get back to you on the fob as I'm still working on the system.
