98-99 A340F differences.

So it seems Google is failing me on actual differences between you the two years. I know 2001-2002 are way different and can't swap into my 98. But what about a 99 A340 in my 98? Seems some sites say 99 is different some say same. The salvage yard says they show they are the same (98-99). I can't find a definite answer. I've got a line on a 99 tranny for a good deal. But unsure of swap ability. I have a 98 SR5 btw.

Anyone know for sure? I need to order ASAP. Salvage yards say they are the same. But my searching seems to say different. Possible valve body differences? My local Toyota dealer is no help. The tranny out of the 99 is close to my house and makes the most sense to buy. But only if it will work correctly in my 98 SR5.

Valve body differences and solenoid differences.

Will fit, but won't shift right.

96-98 work together
99-00 work together
01-02 work together.

Thanks Doc!! I don't like how all the salvage yards say they are the same. A couple of them even argued with me saying the 01-02 were all the same as 96-2000. So my search continues. I was hoping for a local place to have a tranny. No luck.

They really don't care that much.

They're paid to sell parts, and weather or not they work in the car is something they don't care about. Especially if you're putting it in yourself, because then they don't have to worry about the warranty.

That, and because they come from the 3rd gen, they think they're all the same.

Unless you're versed in Toyota's, you'll never know that there were the small differences in valvebodies and such that might not make it work.

There's a place in Hickory, NC that does nothing but Toyota's, but that might be a little far for you to have it shipped or anything like that. If you want the Info I can get it for you.

If you search on car-part.com for a 1999 trans, they indicate a difference between those that came off the line prior to June of '99 and those manufactured after. This may indicate that the '96-'98 to '99-'00 trans switch didn't happen in the factory until June of 1999.

In addition to any valve/solenoid issues, you have to consider Cali emissions trans in '99-'00 to be different from the 49-state. I helped a '99 owner not too long ago and discovered that Cali. emissions trans uses a different pan and filler/gauge tube. So get a 49-state/Federal emissions trans from those years to go into a 49-state/Federal truck, or be prepared to swap those items from your old trans.

I saw that. Ill just make sure to ask for build dates if I end up having to get a 99 tranny.
