99 4runner dies after start up

hey guys, got a 99 4runner with 225k, got the plugs and wires changed 6 months ago, at times when u crank it up and put it into gear it will die , and then its hard to crank back up, and other days it doesnt do it at all, nothing sounds odd when u crank it up, just wants to die ever now and again, any ideas ?

Some sort of blockage with the fuel line/delivery? filter have some buildup thats stopping fuel being delivered? checked vacuum lines? any vacuum leaks?

That would be my call too. Fuel pump, fuel filter, or fuel line.

in addition to the fuel system people commonly recommend cleaning the TB, MAF, and IACV

mine does pretty much the same thing but only after warm up in city traffic on a warm day. won't do it in cool weather. I've heard that it could be over filled trans. choking at idle in gear or over heating trans. won't do it in neutral or park or with AC on because it idles higher when AC and in neutral/park. really weird!! I'm thinking a trans cooler?? any thoughts appreciated....PS maf and manifold cleaned, continues to die.

Check idle air control valve. Could be gummed up.

One thing to consider. Fuel pumps rarely just go all out...they typically get weak, so I would start checking your fuel pressure.

I have a really hard time relating the engine dying do to an over filled transmission or an overheated transmission. Sounds more like you have a engne cooling issue.

IMO thats not true, most fuel pumps fail and stop even firing up when getting power, every failed pump ive had did that.

I've never had one go out right...always just got weaker to the point the engine starts to sputter in which it was then replaced. This did happen on my 3rd Gen as well.
