'99 Cowl Harness Issues

Currently dealing with a '99 Limited that is blowing gauge and STA fuses like there's no tomorrow. Took it to an auto-electric specialist, and they basically said that there was a short in the harness somewhere between the fuse panel and the ECM unit. They gave me an estimate for the work that was more than the value of the vehicle, and I said "Ya know what...? I think I can do this myself for a lot less money..."

Which is why I'm currently gathering resources. I really have no idea what the specific problem actually is, as of yet, but I'm reading the wiring manuals and buying materials.

Problem I'm running into is that the part numbers for the terminal ends aren't really too damn clear, and I'm unable to work out from what I've got and what I can find on here which specific terminals I need to order in from Japan for those specific circuits and connectors. Also, unable to work out the wire diameter I'm supposed to be using in that harness from my resources...

Anyone out there have any guidance on those two issues?

I'm profoundly grateful for the information I've already found on here, but the problem is that not all of my questions are answered.

I don't expect you will need any connectors...

Read the diagrams, unplug everything that is connected to that fuse. Start plugging things in until the fuse blows - that last thing is the problem.

Charlie, as usual, gives good advice. That said, all your terminal and wire size questions are answered in the 418 pages of technical goodness in the attached link, which I am amazed still works.

Prepare yourself, those wire repair sets are not cheap from Toyota. But with these detailed specs you can make your own for cheap. If you only need a few (very probable) getting them from the dealer is worthwhile. They won't have any idea how to look them up, but if you give them the p/n they will order it while looking at you funny. The plug shells (no terminals or wires) are pretty reasonable. You can usually reuse most of the wires/terminals, and just fix the bad ones.

Don't be afraid to run a replacement wire outside the harness if that is the only way. It's not ideal, but I have fixes like that going strong after 15 years plus.
