99 fails California smog test

Dude I think TheDurk is trying to tell you (my guess) how to check in case you need to replace a part, so that you order the right part. And even further, if you go aftermarket (ie non-Toyota OEM) then make sure it is CA emissions legal. This should be posted online.

This is why I posted above. You don't need to change ANY working parts out to smog the car in California. Every properly working USA car with original emissions parts, is CA smog legal. Get it? I'm not sure how to make it more plain.

The DMV and Smog techs are aware there are multiple types (CA emissions & non-CA emmissions) and they test and certify both types without issue.

If you need to replace a BROKEN part to pass smog, fine. This is not unusual. Just get the right part. TheDurk's links are an excellent source.

Yeah, I was going from the idea he was going to end up buying a front exhaust sensor and thus needed to know if he was originally CA-spec or not. A lot of people buy CA-spec trucks in other states and assume they have 49-state trucks, when they really have trucks that were born CA-spec and sold elsewhere (like me, until I got my first new sensor).

The modern DMV computers in states that do inspections know from the VIN and other data it pulls from the ECU if the truck is CA-spec or not, and will test them against the specs they were built to. Including California. In NJ, all that is centrally controlled by the MVS computer in Trenton. If their computer is down, nobody in the whole state can get inspected even at a gas station in West Cupcake, NJ. When it passes, the Trenton computer authorizes the East Cupcake computer to print a PASS sticker with the VIN and a test record number. You can't just slip the guy a twenty or two anymore; Trenton is in charge and talks to directly to your trucks ECU.
