99 sr5 highlander's "build" thread.

Its been a while since my last post and I've done a few more mods, so I figured I should update my build.

At the end of the summer I made a trip down to Moab (again) to meet up with a couple buddies from Oregon.

But first I did few little lighting mods to prep for the trip.

I bought a set of 4 Led cubes on amazon that were on sale for 40 buck total. They are surprisingly good quality, and have worked awesome. I mounted 2 down in my bumper and the other 2 facing backwards on the roof rack to replace the halogens I had up there. The front ones make awesome fog lights, and i was even able to use my factory fog light wiring!

Along with the cubes, I bought a set of 12 single led bolts for 30 bucks. These also work awesome, and I couldn't be happier. I mounted 1 in each footwell so they come on when the door is opened. I really like them and they make the truck feel newer.

I put 6 on the rear hatch to light up the area behind the truck when the hatch is open. Again I wired these to the rear dome light so they come on as soon as I open the back. These are a life saver for setting up camp in the dark.

And with the last 4, I mounted them on the side of the rack to illuminate along side of the truck. With the rear open and the side lights on, the whole area around the truck is illuminated. Awesome for camping.

Alright, now the truck was ready for the trip from Colorado Springs to Moab.

On the road, I went up Old Monarch Pass. Its a really cool historic road thats all dirt with some awesome views.

First day out on the trail. We ran Fins and Things. As I've said before, I think its an awesome way to start a Moab trip and was good for him to start learning the ropes.

Ended up meeting a super nice guy driving a G series Mercedes. It was a pretty sweet truck. (with a diesel!)

Played around in the cracks. Had an awesome time and used all of the flex from the LC coils. I did however slam the front bumper into the rock hard enough to put a nice bend in it. Haha, oh well.

That same day we decided to head up to Top of the World to camp out for the night. It got dark halfway up the trail, so that was an adventure to run at night. Didn't get any pictures as stress levels were kinda high.

We wrapped up and headed back to Colorado Springs and were greater with rain.

Once we got to Colorado Springs we loaded my truck up with all my stuff and hit the road again for Oregon.

Spent the night in Hammocks in the "foot hills" still 10,000 ft elevation.

We spent all of the next 2 days making a B- line for Oregon, through Denver up through Wyoming and Idaho.

That concluded one of the best weeks of my life. Had an awesome time with two really good friends through some of the most beautiful terrain in the country.

After a couple weeks at home it was back to reality, and I headed back to Kansas for school.


A few weeks after I got out to Kansas, I ended up selling my wheels and tires for cash and trade for some new wheels. I ordered up some 255 85 16 BFG Km2s to replace them, and am very happy with their performance.

They run pretty tall, heres them compared to a 285 75 16. (Not under weight, but you get the idea.

Had to do quite a bit of clearancing for the front end. I had to cut a bit out of the front fender and pound the firewall back a good bit, but the only rubbing I have at full bump is right at the top of the wheel opening and I can handle that.

I'm curious how you mounted your hitch behind the bumper! It looks nice. Are you still able to fit the spare tire underneath?

Thanks, I cut the sides off of the factory hitch, flipped them and welded them it all back together. now it bolts up inside the frame. I added some gussets to where I welded it and it held up towing my Landcruiser out and back to Colorado Springs from Kansas. The stock spare does still fit, but my 255 85 16 will not.

I just read through your whole build, she's come a really long way! That trip with a couple friends sounds amazing, I'd love to do that one day.

For your rear lift I saw that you said you are running the OEM LC shocks in the rear. How's the ride with the 7 wraps and those shocks?

I'm looking at the same set up. Also, when you ordered the shocks did they come with the bushing retainer washers that go below the lower and above the upper bushing on the top shock mount or did you have to order them separate?

Thanks! Ya, its funny to look back at the old pictures and seeing it stock. As far as the lift setup. The ride is amazing. The springs are soft enough to be comfortable, and the shock do an awesome job at dampening. You can't beat them at 40 bucks a piece. I did have to source the hardware for the upper mount separately. Came from the same truck the springs did. There's also a washer that went above the lower bushing that I couldn't use because the stud is bigger than the 4Runner one.
 
Started on my rear bumper build! Luckily I get to use the shop at school over interterm to build the bumper. I made the mock up out of wood to get the general idea, but will be building it out of 1/4" angle iron for the mounts and 3/16" for the body of it. Ordered a Hinge from 4xInnovations for the swing out because it appears to be very stout.

All of January term I was busy building my bumper. I am super happy with the results. I think it works better for me than any of the existing options. I kept everything as low profile and close to the body as I could while still having enough clearance for flex. After building it I can now understand why these bumpers are so expensive! I still need to pick up a matching spare, so for now I'm stuck with a fat ugly one.

Yeah, we drove pretty close to there on our way back to Oregon. Unfortunately we couldn't stop and really check out the area due to time constraints.
 
Damn man... just looked through the entire album and thread. Quite impressed with the work you've done! Especially the bumper!!
