99 sr5 highlander's "build" thread.

Dang it is cool to see that thing in action! There was a bunch of 3rd gens from colorado there too around the same time. Did you see any of them?

Glad to hear the 4.88s and ARBs are doing well, man I cannot wait for that.

If you come back this way anytime soon, give me a holler. Moab is a 6 hour drive and I am always ready to go back there.

Yeah I think they left before we got there. Id love to meet up with some other 3rd Gen folks sometime. I do Love the 4:88s. It really woke the truck up.

Very nice! She crawls nicely! Canyonlands was amazing. You guys were probably out there a week after I was. We did White Rim over 2 days and it was stunning. Everywhere you look there's something to look at.

Awesome work on Hell's Gate, you had a perfect line! The 4runner looks great too!

Thanks, I had to adjust a little at the end to keep the front from going sky high. I swapped for some higher spring rate coils in the front and kinda regret it, because they ride stiff and hardly flex at all. So I'm going back to the softer factory springs.

All photos (in this build) fixed!!! :whoo:

Another full update coming soon, but I need a little break from editing posts...

I'm in the process of retrofitting some wide sport flares from a 2001 sport edition. Ive got the passenger side mostly done and plan on finishing both sides up this weekend, as well as a few other projects.

Teaser picture:

I like how the word build is still in quotations in your title haha.

Good job on the pics, it's a pain for sure! Glad there's a good bit of us committed enough to switch everything over.

Haha, I know right? I need a Moderator to change it over, I can't on my own.

I'd suggest sending me your differentials and some of your other parts so you can leave your title as is. It would be for the greater good of the community.

So, I got the drivers side fender flares installed this weekend. I wanted to take a bunch of pictures and do a full write-up, but like with everything I do, I got about halfway through and stopped taking any pictures. I do still need to take them all off again to put the new rubber trim in, so maybe Ill get some more pictures then.

Old flares removed.

I decided to gut the flares to allow for tire clearance and ease of flare installation. I just used nuts and bolts in place of the factory clips.

Since I had no idea where to drill the holes I had to make my own template from masking tape. this was by far the hardest part and its what makes installing sport flares so difficult.

- I taped off the whole fender
- Lined up the flare how i wanted it to fit
- Marked a line on the tape for the edge of the flare
- Tape the flare to the template
-CAREFULLY remove both the template and flare together while not changing the position of the flare on the template.
-Mark the holes on the tape template from the back side.
-Remove the template from the flare.
-Align the template on the fender.
-Mark and drill holes.

You can also see my new Sport Edition badges. I pulled them off an 02 Sport. So now I have completed the 01-02 sport conversion. A keen eye will know that the sport badges would never have been on an imperial jade sport, because it wasn't available in 2002, but they still look cool.

Theres also a plastic bracket that I had to install using the same method. I had to cut the square holes for the clips, so that was a challenge. I also used some epoxy to help hold it.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/152183832@N02/36190103681/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_5145"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4348/36190103681_8dd66bd306_z.jpg" width="640" height="360" alt="IMG_5145"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

TA DA!!!

Theres a little plastic bracket on the bottom and front of the fender that I just chose to epoxy to the fender, I may put some screws through when I pull the flares again.

While at the local B&R getting parts for Echo_Spartan 's new 4runner, I found a new upgrade for mine:

:bounce::bounce::bounce:

I've been looking for manual hubs for a while to alleviate the CV boots and get rid of all the rotating mass in the front end.

I've driven around for a while with the front ABS sensors disconnected to see if it would have any effect on the Speedometer, and so far there has been no difference, so for now I'm just going to bolt everything in with the non-ABS spindles. Later on I'll weld some spindle gussets on my ABS spindles and swap everything over with a press.

More pictures to come of the manual hub swap. I need to get them cleaned up and get the motivation to install them in the hot weather this week. That may or may not happen...

Got the hubs swapped over today! It actually went pretty smoothly, the hardest part was getting the upper ball joint out of the control arm without a ball joint press. Thank God for PB blaster and really big hammers! Disassembly started.

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/152183832@N02/35490713054/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_5123"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4441/35490713054_04a4b1abc8_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="IMG_5123"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I decided to pull the spindles and the CVs off the truck separately. Ill be keeping the spindles to swap over eventually, but the CVs will be for sale. ANYBODY WANT TO BUY SOME OEM CVs WITH NEW INNER BOOTS???

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/152183832@N02/35490714964/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_5137"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4417/35490714964_9bb4a0a3c8_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="IMG_5137"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

I installed the Tacoma spindles, hubs and CVs all as one unit, so that cut down on the install time a lot!

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/152183832@N02/36190101841/in/dateposted-public/" title="IMG_5126"><img src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4315/36190101841_d1e80e44a0_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt="IMG_5126"></a><script async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

So now I have the hubs, spindles, CVs, and lower ball joints from a Tacoma, and the brake rotors, calipers and shocks for a Tundra, Oh and the rear suspension is a combination of front and rear suspension for a Land Cruiser... Hahaha Can you say Frankenyota?

I'll keep this thread updated with the review of how the manual (free wheeling) hubs work out.

Very nice rig so far. Just read through everything and I'm inspired! I've got a Jade Mica Imperial 99 highlander ed also, and I hope it look as good as yours! I noticed you said you didn't have any difficulties disconnecting the ABS for the front hubs. I'm interested in that swap, as I've been wanting manual hubs for a bit now

Thanks, I appreciate the positive feedback. The abs was as simple as unplugging the sensors and hanging them up out of the way. After driving it and using the brakes in hard stops, I can say it is much better, you just have to be smart and not stand on the brakes and try to turn. That being said quick steering inputs probably aren't the best coarse of action anyway.

Just ordered some 315 75 16 Duratracs on the Discount Tire eBay sale. Unfortunately they'll get here right before I leave for SEMA, so I won't be able to install them until I get back.
