99 sr5 suddenly died while driving

Wife was driving it with my kids when it suddenly died. Engine cranks but doesnt turn over all the way. It sounds like it might be a fuel issue..Gas gauge says im at 1/4 tank so unless there is an issue with the float im not sure if its that or not..maybe fuel pump?? How much would a fuel pump be to replace? not very mechanically inclined..Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated!

Timing belt maybe? How many miles ago was it replaced? Maybe not if engine turns over. I don't know if you hear the starter or the engine.

Sounds eerily similar to what happened to me. My engine cranked also but just wouldn't start. Had my mechanic look at it and it baffled him until he got it to run for about a few seconds. He said he noticed the tank at 1/4 before starting it and after it crawled out of the driveway, it died...looked at the tank and it was at bottom E.
Got gas that evening and it was fine after that.

Im hoping its that simple! My family lives very simply and we spent pretty much all we had to get a reliable vehicle and to have expensive repairs less than a month in is really disheartening :/
 
When's the last time it was on a lift? I've seen a few with pretty big dents in the tank from improper lifting that run out right around 1/4 on the gauge. If anything, it's a quick peek underneath to rule it out. The float unit could also be erroneous and it's actually empty.

Honestly just purchased it 3 weeks ago. Had it on a lift last week to have a mechanic look at the muffler ( small tear)
 
I just bought mine a couple of weeks ago and was happily driving along with half a tank when it died on me after exiting the freeway. Got it to start once more before it just wouldn't go any more.

Turned out to be the gas gauge. I had 270 miles on the odometer and she was just out. Put a little gas in it and started right up.

For now I'm monitoring the trip meter and filling up every 250 miles. I'll have to look into the fuel sending unit to really fix it.
 
the fuel gauges are notoriously inaccurate, so I just watch my mileage

I would suspect you're simply out of fuel, and so everything may be fine once you fill up again...

I'd try adding a gallon or two of gas and see if it fires up!

Ask me about the first time I towed with my S/C'd 4Runner! Who knew that at 75mph the thing eats fuel faster than the gauge can read?! I did find out that I can drop an empty fuel tank on the side of Interstate 95 in about 45 minutes though. DOH!
I had cracked the fuel line under the hood to see if the pump was pumping fuel or not and there was barely a trickle so I suspected that my 160,000 mile fuel pump took a dump. Imagine my surprise when I looked into an empty tank! Hey, at least I changed the in-tank fuel filter while it was down.

Vehicles at my mechanics tonight..I'll run by in the AM to dump some gas into into it. MAN! it feels really great to be part of such a dedicated and knowledgable community! Loving the truck aside from this issue.
