99 tall coil comparison

This past spring I decided to trade in my tacoma and buy a 2002 t4r. In an attempt to learn more about my new truck I began searching the Internet for information about everything 4runner. I found this forum and have caught the mod bug! I've done a few mods that's I'm proud of (maybe I should start a build thread) and have turned my attention to a 2" lift.

I went from wanting a spacer lift to tacoma bilsteins with stock springs to a toytec lift to ome to tundra bilsteins with TRD coils to 99 tall and back through the list again...and the more I read, the more confused I got. Finally I found this photo and realized I wanted to go with the 99s as it will give my low riding 02 about 2 inches of lift.

If you're confused about how much lift you can get from 99s, I hope this photo will help you out too.

I bought the truck at 217k and took them off at 218k. I can only assume they've been on there the whole time. 20" fender to hub when loaded with 2 10" sub boxes, 4 rims, golf clubs, and other assorted junk.

When I bought my '99 Limited it had 115k. The wheel wells were 20 1/2" over the hub center in the front, 21" rear. Perhaps there are some other member that can give us this same info for different years. Wheel well above ground dimension should not be used for this comparison.

I just put a set of Highlander springs in the back of mine. I posted this in the "What did you do today" thread, but I'll put it here too because it's relevant to the discussion.

Original springs

New Monroe front struts/coils and wheels installed, factory 2000 springs in rear :

Highlander rear springs installed (there's about 100lbs of gear in the back when this picture was taken) :

I don't have a good side pic of the truck with the original springs all the way around, but it sat level. As you can see the Monroe struts/springs I installed sat considerably higher than the factory 2000 springs. I'm not sure whether this was due to settling, or if they were just taller springs. I'm guessing a little of both. I bought the Highlander rear springs with intentions of adding spacers to the front to level it out, but as you can see I didn't need them.

I just measured it. I'm 21" from fender to hub in the front, and 20.5 in the rear. So that means the Monroe struts are actually still sitting higher than even the Highlander springs.

They're about $88 per side.
I got the Highlander springs (PN 48231-35210) for the rear from Amazon for $105 each.

Hope that helps anyone who's considering a mild lift. :decision:

I got an 02 SR5 with the 99 tall coils up front & OME 906 in rear. Nice ride and looks much better than before for sure. No more sag with a full load or with the boat in tow. Ill try to get some pics for you soon.

I would really like to see the way this looks. Also it looks like you have the painted flares as well. Would you be able to get some center of hub to fender flare measurements for me? This is the set up that I have been contemplating going with as well, so I'd like to see how much lift this would give me.

I doubt their age/milage has much impact on their "removed from vehicle" height. Although I am crious, has anyone compared a new '99 to a used '99?

Well, I've seen enough sagged springs from all makes and models of vehicles, to know that sagged springs are shorter than otherwise identical new springs, even off the vehicle.

That's why there is a free-length service limit for springs. All springs, not just vehicle suspension springs. Eventually they permanently compress, and should be replaced to retain the original spec. performance.

So in the above illustration we have 3 sets of springs with unknown sag, and what appears to be a new '99 set. If we had a picture where all sets of springs were new, that would give us an idea of the spring free length for new sets of springs. Even then it still wouldn't tell us the spring rate of each set.

The bottom line is that the picture is useless in conveying any real information.

They wanted to convey a message with the pic. It does work on the uninformed.

Your rig looks great! I have near-new front 99 coils on tacoma bilstein 5100s and was planning on going with 99s in the rear too, but now I might reconsider...

Thanks man. I like the look of my truck so far. It is coming along nicely IMO. I don't have exact measurements but here is a recent pic I took last weekend when we were out kayaking. Full load in the rear and the 60 pound kayak and the ride was still great. I like the OME 906 springs with the 5100 Bilsteins out back. Gives it a little more backbone in my opinion and wont sag as much as stock coils. I went from 02 coils with 120,000 miles to brand new 99s all around and brand new shocks. Ride is night and day and I don't think you will be disappointed.

Just to clarify...You currently have 4600/99 Talls in front, and 5100/906 in the rear?

Your ride looks great, and surprisingly looks level. I assumed the 99 front would be too low for the 906 rear. I've considered 906 rear with the OME 880 front, as well as the TRD Tundra front. But you've got me reconsidering.

Hub to fender measurements would be helpful if you get a free minute!

My new (to me) 2001 SR5 looks to have had blue/yellow marked '99 rear coils installed by the previous owner. Can anyone with these on their rig verify height from ground to rear bumper?

I got about 1" of lift with the 99 talls all around paired with Billy 5100's. I put airbags in the rear to prevent sag with the weight I have back there.
