A 2005 T4R SR5 v6 question

Does it use a timing belt or a timing chain? Do I need to replace it every 70k miles or so? Thanks alot

The V6 on your '05 has a timing chain. Should last the life of the engine. It also has two more smaller timing chains that are connected to the cams for each side of the block that drive the VVTi modules. I remember seeing a diagram of it on a Toyota technical white paper a while back.

Because the belts are for the V8 (read the add a little further down) :bigok:

kxu, the V8 models have a timing belts. Must be for that. The V6 aluminum blocks use a chain.

I found that technical paper I was talking about on the V6 1GR-FE engine that the 4runner and FJ share. Granted the entire pdf is on the FJ, but on page 36 of the pdf and it shows some really good reading on the 1GR-FE engine. Good diagrams too.

Could this be why the V6 has that tapping noise coming from the engine (because of the timing chain), or is it common on the V8 too?

Another thing to consider about that ticking noise is that the V6 is an aluminum block engine so the noise is transmitted more. From what I've read on the forums, it is more likely the fuel injectors making that plusing noise. I don't worry about it as the truck has been mechanically flawless for me. Also I haven't heard of anyone having cautastrophic engine failure on the V6 (other than that guy who's wife drove the truck without oil = http://toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=25254&highlight=engine+replacement). Can't really blame that on the truck though

Interesting note - The VVTi controllers use motor oil, as the media, to vary the valve timing.
