A/C Filter Rip Off

Had my 4 runner serviced at a Toyota dealer, oil change, and the tech showed me the a/c filter suggesting it needed changing. I told him to go ahead and was shocked when I went to pay the bill. They were charging me $49.00 for a very simple little filter. It's only about 8"'s square and looks similar to the plastic webbed home a/c unit filters. I could see maybe $10 for the unit which probably costs 50 cents to make. I told them to take their filter off and stuff it.

They started me at $38, I told them I would pay $18. They took it.

Had my rig in on a coupon last week. Oil/filter/tire rotation and a free A/C filter for $48. I thought what a great deal since the filter is generally $18 w/o the 5 minutes of labor it takes to remove the glovebox.

Went to pick up the rig and they had 'conveniently' forgotten to replace the filter! I got a free oil change out of it, but no filter.

Can these people even understand English?

I had a friend, who has moved to another state that worked as Toyota mechanic. He bought me my first two HVAC filters for $ 13.00/ea. Employees get a discount. If I walk up to that very same dealer, they want $29 for it; so do the math. The mark-up is hideous:eek:

Thanks

Thanks for the information. Looks like I'm off to Home Depot.
I still say the filter looks like it would cost 50 cents to manufacture.

I did this mod this past week. I was able to get mine pretty snug-much better fit than the Toyota filter. Easy to do and no more grabing your ankles at the dealer...:bugeye:
