A/C problems

So the ac in my 96 has been a pain in the butt. It will work just fine and be cold as can be for a good while then just start blowing air randomly and won't get cold a gain. I notice if I stop driving the car for a few hours or so then it'll work once I get back in it but then shut off as usually. Not really sure if it's after a specific amount of time, doesn't seem to be. I don't know what it is or if a part is just shutting off after a little or what. I havnt tried recharging it yet but don't want to waste time and money on that if that's not the issue. but it's a pain when you have a kid in the car and its hot out. Need some help asap!

You can't diagnose A/C without a set of gauges on it and watching what it does. I agree it doesn't sound like just a charge, so either get some gauges or take it to some one who has them.
 
Sounds like the expansion valve might be freezing due to moisture in the system and then becoming unfrozen after you turn the AC off allowing for the system to work again. Like already mentioned, a manifold gauge set is needed to help diagnose this problem.
 
Thanks everyone! I'll have to go get it checked out and see. I might have a friend with those gauges so I'll hit him up and see!

Try to take it off of the recirculate function and see if it still does it.

I has something similar on my 05 sienna van.. Turned out to marginal or faulty thermostat .. When in morning or cold, works fine, but when driven for while, ac cold air cuts out and it's warm air.. Popped hood and ac clutch is not spinning or not engaged running.. Noticed after troubleshooting while driving, temp gauge goes above half way slightly but not red overheating condition.. As AC starts blowing warm air, sync with temp gauge movement.. I then Popped hood with engine on, feel upper and lower radiator hoses..sure enough top is hot to touch while bottom hose is not. So no full circulation off coolant.. Thermostat.... Changed thermostat, problem fixed... Ac cold no matter what..
Basically faulty thermostat is blocking flow thus rise in Temp gauge, enough to trigger hot condition to ECM... Which shuts off the ac compressor clutch to disengage to save the compressor..
Ac is now running fine, hot, cold, or 4 hr ride .
Atleast that was my case... Just a thought.

^ providing that's true then that's one ic the cheaper fixes. Replaced that on my Y2K maxima and it was like $20 for the part and like 20 minutes. By antifreeze because replacing that should leak some out
