A/C question

Does anyone know how much Pag 46 or ND8 oil needs to be added to a dry system on an 05 Limited V6? All components will be new, with the exception of the compressor, and it will be flushed.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I was having trouble finding it also. Finally got to speak to the HVAC guy at the local dealer who told me 4.5 oz of Pag 46 oil. Said the Pag 46 oil was the same as the more expensive Denso ND8.

If I remember right the ND8 was safe for hybrids so it's pricey stuff.

All brand new components from compressor to evaporator core? I'm guessing the compressor took a shit and blew metal all through out the system? I've had a couple I've had to do because of that.

Usually at least for most Toyota parts, the components come with some oil in them so you don't have to add much of any oil to the system. I'd say 4.5oz sounds about right for the entire system.

I was thinking you could probably add some insight to this. Thank you. Actually, evaporator leak, so replace items inside the dash while it's out. With 231k on the clock, figured condenser and drier while I'm at it. Considering compressor eventhough it hasn't been a problem, but would hate for everything else to be new and shiny and then the compressor blow chunks. Please convince me not to spend some more money haha.

Ooh that's tough... I mean there's the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" argument there... but if you're gonna have the system already opened up, replacing the condenser and everything else... it may not hurt to just chuck a compressor in there. Honestly if it were my 4Runner at that mileage and in your place, I'd probably throw a compressor in it just for peace of mind (expensive peace of mind) just because everything else is getting changed out and the mileage (I know I'm weird that way lol).

I recommend a new Denso unit, I know Carquest sells them with core-charge so it'd be basically the same as factory for a better price than the dealer if you were gonna go that route.

Yeah I've seen the Densos priced around $250, so not bad for some peace of mind. Is there any of these a/c items that are a must to go dealer with? I see all the items available with Denso part numbers, so was hopeful that would be ok.

Not really if you can get Denso/Asin/NGK alternatives as for most intents and purposes they just lack the "Toyota" stamp on them. This is a fairly standard AC system so anyone with a properly functioning R134a machine should be able to recharge it and get it working again. Usually the compressor and condenser come with enough oil for the entire system, so you really don't need to add much if any to the system. $250 with core isn't a bad price at all, I think last time I looked it was over $700 for a new dealer-sourced one. Just make sure that it comes with the magnetic clutch installed, I can't remember which ones do and/or don't but I've had a couple Toyota ones where you need to order the clutch assembly separate; not sure if it's the same with the Denso ones.

I will check on the clutch assembly. Thanks for the help. Thought I was going to wait til spring for this project, but the way the weather has been in southern Missouri lately it's like spring in February.
