A Different Looking Oil Filter Housing Removal Tool

I opened this thread back when - things became heated - sorry about that.

Now I'll answer the question raised in my opening post regarding the oil filter housing tool referenced there.

The tool in the youtube video does not work on a 2014 Toyota 4 Runner SR5 2WD 1GR-FE engine. Toyota added what I'll call an alignment tab used to prevent over-tightening that is affixed to one of the ears that this tool would slide into. This oil filter housing alignment tab can be seen in Antman's oil change thread. The tool works quite well on my '06 Avalon 2GR-FE engine because that oil filter housing simply has 2 metal ears for this tool to slide on to. There is no alignment tab on that yr/model. My guess is it won't work on any oil filter housing that has an alignment tab.

I also have the Private Brand Tools Toyota Oil Filter Housing Removal Tool - PBT 71113. That tool fits quite nicely onto the newer black plastic housing used on my 2014 T4R. No interference from the alignment tab on the black plastic oil filter housing using the PBT 71113 oil filter housing removal tool.

I bought this tool and used it on the plastic housing on my 2010. I removed the alignment tab from the housing as it's pretty easy to see the alignment without the tab. The tool worked quite well, better than the 14-sided cup tools I've used in the past.

I will eventually remove it as well, but am going to let the dealer do the 10K/20K oil change. I suspected their lube techs would freak out and deny the service if this alignment tab was missing, but you are right - if it's not in the way, the tool I pointed to in the opening post will work. I use it on my '06 Avalon as well.

it may not have been a cost cutting measure, it simply might have been that the plastic -dissipates the heat quicker
-won't scar up the threads on the more expensive pieces it screws onto
-and like someone mentioned.. might take a hit better than metal/aluminum since it can bend a little.

i'm not backing up anyone or any idea over the other.. just stating my thoughts on the matter
 
Hi Everyone,

can someone confirm the part number for either the Plastic or the Metal oil filter canister? The local shop said they cracked the original canister on my wife's 2014 and rather than argue over the phone with my wife on who needs to buy a new one I just want to order a new one and have them install it when it arrives.

i have gathered that his is the metal replacement??

Just found out last night that the plastic versions with the longer filter straw are 130 bucks at the dealer!!! the metal ones on the other hand are all over Ebay and Amazon for 23 so i'll see if i can modify the metal one with the existing cracked plastic version... seems like the only difference is the straw that connects the filter, wish me luck!-

You can do just that. There is a thread on here somewhere that shows how to change the center tube, which is the only difference. When I did mine I remember just bending 2 metal tabs to get the tube out, then reversing the process on the metal version.

FWIW, I did this upgrade after reading a thread on the plastic one cracking and leaking oil. Over-torque most likely, but who knows?

Thanks, I have that exact metal filler on order! Clearly the Jiffy Lube that my wife brought the car to over tightened the cap... I called them and told them they need to top off the oil once I switch the filter cap.
 
does anyone know which way the oil flows thru the oil filter housing? inside down the center tube to out or outside in to the center?
