A little help please

I've done a search and came up with a few bits here and there... but nothing that quite full fits the abundance of issues I'm having. I thought I might type my thoughts out on here and see if anybody has a couple thoughts to add in.

I'll start by saying this happened after I got stuck...

The problems didnt start until shorthly after I washed the truck and vacuumed out the water from inside.

As it is now the defroster only works for 3 seconds after the 4Runner is started, rear wipers don't work and the rear hatch will not open. Window also will not go up/down. Oddly enough everything was fine until I went to clean it. My suspect is the rear hatch control module, however I'm not so sure what exactly that includes. (I haven't dug into any wiring diagrams much beyond my Haines Manual YET*). I plan to rip open all the cladding to search for a rotten wires and I will inspect the wiring harness as best I can but any other ideas from you T4R guys would be fantastic.

Also, I have no clue how to even open the gate without power so that might be nice to know. Ill check the fuse(s) once it stops raining (that would be nice) but after a such a crummy morning, I doubt it could be so simple.

Was part of the rear hatch submerged in water? I believe the module that controls the window is back there.

On the good side of things, usually when you get the problems your having all together, its one fix. Altho I never heard of the defroster working for 3 secs, usually it either works or it doesn't.

I wonder if it is shorting somehow and the defroster is shut itself off. I know on some cars the defrost will shut itself off after long while

Gotta love a self solving problem

I never actual swam around to the back to check the water line relative to the hitch but I doubt it was submerged.

Regardless... I got a funny story, the wife went to get the dog's bowl from the back. I noticed the bowl and normally I'd get an earfull about how I broke the truck again so I asked if everything was ok when she got the bowl (avoiding any information that there was ever a porblem) and she had no clue what I was talking about. So I went to check it out and everythings appears to be fine.

I'll be looking into this alot more once I download a few electrical drawings, and rip open the door to see if there is a muddy water line. Just seems very strange a fuse never went and that so much was affected from this. And still strange that it all happened after I cleaned and vacuumed the interior. And now all is good... I'm baffled in a good way

Leason learnt - never clean the 4Runner or things will get fuky!



Just a tip for some who wheel... disconnect the latch on your hood so in times like this the hood can be opened from the window before you go crawling out to deal with the winch, never understood why my bddy made me do it until today.

What could have happened is the module saw some sort of voltage/current spike and/or draw it did not like and shut itself down. It might not have been enough to blow a fuse but enough that the module thought it would get hurt and protected itself.

I'd keep an eye on it and check to see if any water got in there, it probably just started working again because it dried out, or no longer sees the oddity. Hopefully it did that rather than become compromised.

That'd be my best guess at the moment.

Good point, I will investigate and post what I find.

On a separate issue, it won't start now despite starting and stopping a few times throughout the day. It's to dark to deal with it so I'm hittin the beer pretty hard right now but it's starting to look like tommoro will be a busy day.

A quick update...

Everything is fine with the truck, just will not start. All fuses are good, I've traced and tested as much electrical wires that I can without riping the intake apart to get at the starter. I'm completely stumped, but a twitch in my brain is telling me that its the computer that's having problems.

I've always heard when electronics get wet, just put them in a bowl of rice. I would say you need to take a field trip to Uncle Ben's! :biggrin2:

After more trouble shooting and searching still no luck.

Its still in the shop (owned by a good family friend). All wires have been traced, and each component has been tested according to the wiring diagram and the batery was used to bypass the iginition switch and the engine did turn over (no fuel pump running for a proper startup as it was tricked to turn over). Seems like there is a problem before the ignition relay however the relay tested good. Alarm system also tested good as well as the park/neutral sensor. All wires look to be in good shape from battery outward.

Another update... ICBC (insurance) wont touch the truck, they called it a total loss and its on its way to the crusher this week. My build has a my final post on this forum.
