A little help with the lift gate

Ok, I have searched and gone through Harper7's build and cant come up with the answer.

I want to remove the chrome emblem on the lift gate so I can plastiDip it. My question is how many bolts is holding it on. I can see three but am wondering if there is a fourth one that is hidden under the sheet metal.


I ask only because I don't want to break into that plastic thing (sealer?) and realize it is more of a pain to remove the the emblem then to just paint it on the truck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And you guys that have swapped the LE/SR5 one to a TE please chim in.

I remember reading one of harper's post about needing to have to remove/ or through the plastic to get to all the hardware thats holding it on. I'll have to see if I can find the OP. Hoepfully harper can chime in!

I had to replace mine already :ybrick:. If I am not mistaken there are 2 bolts, left and right sides, and a plastic clip in the top middle (toyota emblem). You HAVE to remove the rear gate 'door' on the inside to access the nuts on the back side. Removing that inside part of the gate is very easy to do and replace.

I had to replace mine already :ybrick:. If I am not mistaken there are 2 bolts, left and right sides, and a plastic clip in the top middle (toyota emblem). You HAVE to remove the rear gate 'door' on the inside to access the nuts on the back side. Removing that inside part of the gate is very easy to do and replace.

Yeah the plastic gate cover is simple, I just need to know how many bolts or nuts I will be taking off or is it easier to mask and paint on the car.

I painted the entire rear emblem/garnish while on the truck because I didn't want to remove them like the front grill (which is way easy to do compared to the rear). The hardest part was taping the plastic drop sheet around the garnish and sanding the space in between the emblem/garnish. No problems with the paint job on the rear as I have not needed to repaint it.

Easy is all relative to the man holding the wrench. Probably take you the same amount of time either way, just a matter of preference and if you feel comfortable removing the piece.

I am going to do the same but I am just going to order the new panel for the 4runner emblem and the toyota emblem and 4runner emblem this way I can paint it then if turns out good then I will figure out how to take it apart and put it back together lol and keep the stock parts for later. 5. REMOVE BACK DOOR OUTSIDE GARNISH (w/o Smart Key System)
(a) Disconnect the connector.

(b) Remove the 4 nuts.

(c) Detach the 3 clips and remove the back door outside garnish.



6. REMOVE BACK DOOR OUTSIDE GARNISH (w/ Smart Key System)
(a) Disconnect the 2 connectors.

(b) Remove the 4 nuts.

(c) Detach the 3 clips and back door outside garnish.

(b) Remove the 4 nuts.

(c) Detach the 3 clips and back door outside garnish.

Now I just need to find that dang 4th nut. Thanks

per the pictures in the FSM, they(bolts) should be in a straight line all across at the same level. The three tabs are in a triangular pattern-one at the top, two on the bottom.

Easy? How the frik do you get to the bolts? I have one of the nuts come off and was rattling around inside my lift gate till eventuall it found its way near the plastic handles. I remove the plastic handle to retrieve the nut and can see with a flashlight where it came off of but there is no way I can fit my arm thru that opening to put it back on. I can not see anywY to access it?

Lift gate scraping when opening

I need some help!!

I backed up into a garage lower then the height of my 4runner, obviously didnt know it was lower till after smashing the spoiler on the lift gate. $1300.00 dollars to replace it. I ordered the spoiler to replace it myself but now i just need help on re aligning my lift gate cause its scraping the car when i open it. And its only in the middle. If anyone can help me or direct me where i could get info on fixing this issue before it rusts. PLEASE HELP!
