A little more power

do what you want and say what you like, im just trying to give the guy some advice and my own opinion, there is no sense paying 45 something dollars for a filter that barely give you any HP and requires cleaning all the time.

To op: try to find a true flow filter on the internet they are very good filters, and do the deckplate mod you can deff feel a little power gain in the higher rpm range, and maybe do an exhuast mostly for sound but im sure it give you like 1 hp or more :D

45 is not expensive and if you think that is expensive you might need a different car. The k&n drop in filter has nothing to do with HP. It's just a liftetime filter. A filter costs what, twenty bucks? Keep it for 2 years and it pays for itself. The cleaning interval is like 15000 miles so I definetely would not call that all the time and its not a very big job.

When I bought the runner I replaced the filter it had with a K&N drop in going on a couple months now haven't oiled it and no codes so far so good (knock on wood). Thanks for all the advice I hear that ISR mod is worthless without an exhaust? What exhaust is most common with 3rd gens I never really even thought about an exhaust upgrade.

loud flowmaster 40

louder flowmaster 44

deep flowmaster 50

crazy loud cherry bomb

sporty borla

actually when maf get dirtier you get better mpg, computer reads less air thus give less fuel
that's probably true, but running lean isn't good

mufflers are cool, but when he meant exhaust, im sure he meant actual headers, high flow cat, and larger piping all the way back.

CC, Intake is practically useless without exhaust because the system is still restricted. You're getting better air flow into the engine (still has a stock bore throttle body and intake manifold/plenum) but the restricting stock exhaust piping out negates any benefit with airflow.

Even doing both intake and full exhaust, I didn't notice much gain. The supercharger changed things, I am sure with stock exhaust, I would be slower.

That is exactly what I meant so at the end of the day it seems like even with the mods listed it would only be minimal to no gain which sucks!

Again thank you all for the help just wanted to make sure I had a clear answer on this

save your money and buy a car, people dont buy 4runner for speed, even with a supercharger 4runners arnt that fast

Just based on my new experiences with my supercharger, I am really not aiming for fast, I just want more throttle response and a little more grunt. It's still slower than practically any new V6 out there, but at least now it gets out of it's own way.

As I stated earlier I wouldn't have mentioned this if i didn't experience a significant loss of power going up a mountain I definitely didn't buy the 4runner for speed I sold my B5 Audi S4 for the runner because I needed a bigger car. I have a 400hp Jaguar for speed :)

understood, so you want your runner to have a little more kick, well i would deff do the deck plate mod and get a higher flow muffler, and make sure all your maintance are up to date, stuff like old sparkplugs and sparkplug wire can hurt hp, also clean your TB and the maf, little trick is to turn off O/D when you go up hill and engage in ECT mode, that way your truck stay in rpm power range, also change you diff and transfer-case fluid and your oil the full synthetic, less oil drag means more speed, all these little thing together can really make a difference:thumb3:

Thanks, I'll try that tip in the future (of using ECT mode)

I think you should probably just "refresh" some of your older Toyota components and make a few small mods.

I don't think a S/C or headers are worth it unless you are buying the truck with them or you have the 4CYL and are dying for more power. I know the 4Runner V6 is not the strongest, but when combined with a K&N Cold Air + High Flow Exhaust the truck should have plenty of getup and go. The catch is, that everything must be working to factory specs and that is rarely the case on older trucks like this.

I upgraded my intake to a full K&N Cold Air and at the same time also added a CAT-back full exhaust via Flowmaster. I have documented this is you want to listed to it there is a video in my thread.

Anyways. There are many things that can make a truck feel sluggish like the transmission, suspension (especially), and the engine being old. Now if you had 75,000 miles and were complaining that would be one thing, but these trucks are a lot older and you might need to start replacing some of your stock components with new Toyota parts.

I really liked this post from BishFishAllDay

Replacing the parts below brought my fuel economy up by 4 MPG on my '97 so I'm hoping it will help out w/her '00...

Spark Plugs
Spark Plug Wires
PCV Valve & Grommet
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Front O2 Sensor
Drain & Refill Front & Rear Differentials and Transfer Case with Redline 75w90
Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner
Oil Change & Filter

If I were you I would do all of those things + high flow exhaust + K&N and maybe the injectors and a seafoam cleaning BEFORE spending your cash on headers or a S/C.

I have headers btw but only because I had an engine rebuild and it was almost no labor to add them. I doubt they are worth it if you have to take it all apart for only that reason.

END

Don't waste your time with these deckplates, oiled filters, headers, blah blah blah; snake oil, every one. You need to get yourself a g-force chip, a turbonator, and a hydrogen injection with on-board electrolysis. You can add about 100hp and fuel efficiency with all these.

that actually works if its on a large scale, wont help the hp much but mpg wise
