A little rear suspension lift advice?

I am planning on lifting my 4Runner with a 3" suspension lift. I already have the front, Toytec BOSS coilovers (550lb springs), and now I am worrying about finishing off the lift with the rear suspension components. I have considered buying used LC coils and shocks (probably 7 or 7.5 wraps), but it seems that a lot of people think they are too soft. Are they pretty soft?

I would like to do the rear setup on a bit of a budget, and I don't want something with a really firm ride. I like the stock ride, but I want more tow hitch clearance, as well as other body clearance. I have also considered 890 springs with Bilstein or OME shocks; I'd like something cheaper. Should I maybe get the LC setup, just so I can get everything installed... then, at a later time, if I don't like the soft LC stuff, upgrade to another setup? I think I'd rather get just what I want the first time.

Thoughts?

I'm in the same situation as you on deciding which rear suspension I am going to go with. I'm leaning more towards LC coils because for me they are easier to get and cheaper. You say you don't want a firm ride then I would suggest you stay away from OME coils. I had 890s on my last 4R and they rode rough. I've heard that LC coils ride much better. Good luck who your decision.
 
I have the Toytec Super flex Coils and the Bilstein extend 5100 they sell. I do about 1 inch of rake. You can check out my photos to see if you like the stance. The ride matches the boss 550 very well. I also debated going 890 but also wanted a little rake. Good luck!

LC coils ride soft and can be had cheap, so based on this post I'd say get them.

Don't expect them to hold up under weight, if you carry a lot of gear or build some drawers/storage in the cargo area they will sag due to the lower spring rate, which gives them the nice ride.

I had 890s, and swapped them for LX 8-wraps that definitely ride softer on the road.
 
Thanks for all the input! I really appreciate the help. Since I want good flex and a decent ride on-road, I think I am leaning towards some LC coils, probably 7 wraps to avoid too much rake. I'd like only about 0.5" of rake, or hardly noticeable. I do usually carry about 75-100lbs of gear in the back, but I'm thinking that's not too much. As far as towing goes... I might tow a Wave Runner a few times per summer, only 10-20 miles; no other major towing plans.

I'm also thinking, if they don't work out for me... I haven't invested much, I could probably re-sell them, and replacements would be cheap (maybe 8 wraps).

Shocks for the LC coils?? Should I get the LC rear shocks and be good, or would OME shocks benefit me?

I would recommend the LC Coils, and the LC Shocks to maintain the softer ride. Especially if the waverunner to and from the lake is your only intention towing.
 
I have LC 8 wraps and they ride soft. I like it because when you do go over bumps, they absorb the blow instead of jarring your teeth. Flex real nice too!! Im about to put a new CBI rear bumper, so I got ahold of a set of 8.75 wraps to compensate for the added weight. Ill probably put the 8 wraps up for sale.

I also have the 890s, and was previously running the 5100s in the back. I felt it was very plush. The shocks couldn't keep up with my front suspension during hard wheeling though. Was lucky to find a good deal on used Icons for the rear, so I ditched the 5100s. Stiffer now (probably not what you're after), but way WAY better in the dirt.

Anyway, 3" with 890s and 5100s is a very comfy ride IMO.
 
Front or Rear LC Coil?

I just want to clarify is the Front or the Rear of the LC will fit the 4runner's rear?

Don't do the 7's. Use at least 8 wrap. Guaranteed they will be too soft if you do any trips with more than 150lbs of gear/people. I just did a canyoneering trip through Zion and was not happy with how the ride was with 4 people and gear and that was with the 8's. They were about 1-2" lower than started with that much gear... when the vehicle is completely empty it rides 1/2" higher in the rear which is how it should sit IMO. I always have a recovery box and 7 gal of water in tow which sits it level.
 
Cool. Thanks for the info. I picked up a 7.5 and an 8 wrap to try out.

Can anyone tell me if the Bilstein 5165 shock would be a good match for the LC springs? How about the 5165 with 890 springs?
