A New version of "Entune" is available!

Hey barryhiram,

Last September I learned that there was an O.S. update (5.1) that was said to resolve many of the issues that My truck was having e.g., trouble with the audio system playlist/track advance & back buttons inoperative, daily phone BT pairing, connectivity issues... etc! So I dropped in the update (swdl.iso) and all of those issues, after three years, miraculously disappeared! So now there's a newer (swdl.iso 5.2) update.

(Question:) Why did you become interested in this update; were you having issues with the phone, the audio system, navi system... or did you swap out the O.S. software as a precautionary measure or because it was available? Also, has anything changed resulting from the update? I'm just trying to decide if I have reason to refresh the software or "to leave well enough alone"... after all it is working just as it should now (knock on wood)! Thanks bro!

"Best to you"!

Morning Greg,

"Knock on wood" I've never experienced any of the issues you have. Typically (like PC's) when firmware updates are released I update to take advantage of any improvements........kind of being pro active.

Your question, should I or shouldn't I update, wish I could suggest one way or another but without knowing what's been changed, I wouldn't even try.

Do you still have a copy of update 5.1.0? If so, and you decide to update to 5.2 and it doesn't work, you could always revert back to 5.1

Good luck which ever way you decide.

Cheers buddy!

My wife has a 2012 trail with entune. Never had an issue except lately when on Pandora or I heart radio, it will play then pause, play then pause. Question? Can I tell which version I have without plugging in a thumb drive with an update loaded? If not, where do I get the latest version for a 2012 entune unit. NON JBL that is.

Thanks,

Thanks Barry,

Something inside of me says: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"! That's always worked for me! ...plus i'm lazy and don't want to make a repair if I don't have to! Now if you would have said... Oh man, you gotta get this update rig...!" then I'm there! But not without monumental changes on the horizon lol!

Thanks Barry!

Can't disagree with your logic Greg!

Software updates is there for a good reason and not like replacing perfectly good part such as clean air filter or brand new oil. Even though some might be minor tweaks programmers found issues with current program and came up with update. I don't think any car company would develop and distribute update that is something useless. Our head unit is a computer and like it or not PC, Laptop or in this case radio needs an update time to time. Something as simple as a newly built road on entune map might be useful someday driver may look for directions. Just my 0.02 $

I've got the most updated software on mine, but it crashes frequently. Dealer will order new head unit if I would like.

I updated the software on my 2016 several months ago when prompted. Never had any trouble with it until this morning. It crashed 5 times on my way to work. Just shut down and restarted.

Just an FYI I just ran the latest update (5.3 that was linked to here's) and it resolved the Bluetooth/iPod connection issues I was having with my iPhone 6 (iOS 9.x). Basically the perpetual spinning "connecting" disc from hell.

I, of course, am sure next iPhone update will break that again.

The new update did fix one minor annoyance I had when playing music with the USB.

If you were half way through a song and turned off the truck, the next time you started it, it would start back at the beginning of the song. Now it just plays from where it left off.

1st world problem I know, but Im glad they fixed it.

First post as a member here peoples....recently purchased 2014 TE w/ 17k miles and love it. Glad to be a part of the club.

Was experiencing some issues with Entune, and being fairly tech savvy wanted to make sure I was running newest update and get everything squared away while under warranty.

Here's my saga so far:

#1) Called Entune support, operator told me it was NOT possible to update my own system software on my 2014 head unit. Also informed me my Audio unit driver was an older version and should be ending in D4 or 54.

#2) They told me the only way to update was at dealership.

#3) Took it to TWO dealerships in Boston, MA area...Expressway Toyota (horrible service never going back) took 5 hours to tell me head unit would not take update and needed to replace headunit. I opted out.

#4) Took 4runner to Acton Toyota (much better customer service and free lunch!). I walked outside while they were trying to update and the service technician showed me the complexity of updating the software. He had a printed out manual about 15 pages long with a variety of codes and drivers for the head units dependant on the model and year of the car and head unit. It was very complicated and he informed me that you can actually completely screw up your head unit and void the warranty by trying to install the wrong software yourself.

Unfortunately after all this, he couldn't get the head unit to update and confirmed that I need to order a new head unit. Luckily I have quite a few miles left on my factory warranty and have extended warranty to 100k so I'll be covered.

My system is functioning more or less okay and without issue so I'm in no hurry to update the whole computer/stereo, maybe I'll wait until a new 2017 or 2018 version comes out that might have Apple Carplay tech since I'm an Apple user...

Either way, I've spent hours and hours on the phone with Entune support and dealing with 2 dealerships so I feel your pain...

Conclusion, if the unit is functioning okay don't worry about the update.

If you must update or have an issue, be sure to call Entune and check if you have a user updatable head unit before trying anything.

And if you have a warranty, get that thing checked out while you can in case you do need to get it replaced.

THIS POST IS FOR NOT FOR 2014-2016 4Runners! DONT WASTE YOUR TIME LIKE I DID OR OTHERS.

Sorry about the all caps, but I see people wasting time on an update that doesnt pertain to their vehicle.

entune update for 2016 TEP

Just a heads up that I think there is an update for 2016 models (at least it was new to me). However I don't think the instructions in this thread are applicable.

It is version 010182.

We really need a consolidated thread about Entune versions by year/model as the information is really hard to find. Calling Entune support is comical and was largely useless for me.

I'd try create the thread, but I don't have enough posts.

I believe the update occurs automatically through Bluetooth and the Entune App. I noticed that a message appeared on my screen yesterday that normally comes with an update.

Yes, I agree we need to have this consolidated according to the year of the vehicle.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm in a pinch and hope someone can help me. Yesterday I tried to update the stereo in my 2013 TE to version 5.2.0 using the USB stick method. The update bombed out midway through and now the stereo is stuck in update mode. Took it to the dealership who told me the update I tried to do bricked the control module and now I need to spend $700 on a new one.

Here's the real kicker though. The service rep informed me that the securedp.toyota.com website that everyone uses to download the software is NOT a real Toyota site. Can anyone confirm or deny that? Does anyone happen to have anything official from Toyota (an email or something) they can share where Toyota says to use that site to download updates?

securedp.toyota.com is a subdomain of toyota.com.

Toyota owns the base domain of toyota.com and any subdomain off of it is at least authorized by them.

You need a new dealer.

Whois output in the attachment.

BTW, I did a search of "entune stuck in update mode" and there seems to be a number of different things to try. Most important is to make sure you use a smaller, freshly formatted USB stick.

Toyota Dealer is FOS. There is no reason to replace or reprogram anything. If update fails you just turn off your ignition, wait about a minute, insert USB with ONLY Update File (Make sure there are no other files on memory stick) then turn ignition back on. If that fails - Disconnect the battery for 30 min and try previous steps. Update fail happened to me once little while ago and then completed without issues. Just keep in mind you have to complete that half failed update, it won't revert back on its own.

Thanks to those who replied. I'm stuck between a rock and a bigger rock here because it sounds like the service department at the dealership doesn't know WTF they're talking about, and Toyota Customer Care basically told me to go pound sand on the bricked control module. I spent an hour on the phone with Customer Care fending off a loooong list of ways the rep was trying to weasel out of actually doing anything to help me and trying to put the blame on me. It would have been insulting if it weren't so infuriating. In the end the rep basically told me there's probably not much she can do to help me out with the $700 replacement of the control module because I "don't have a record of brand loyalty to Toyota". Meaning, it's the first Toyota I've ever purchased, I purchased it from a private party (i.e. not from directly from a Toyota dealer), and I only have a single service record in the few months I've owned it. In other words, since I haven't given enough money to Toyota yet, they're not really interested in helping me. Nice. All I know is that I performed a Toyota-recommended update, using software downloaded from Toyota's website, and now I'm facing a $700 repair bill because of it.

this is a stab in the dark, but i've read elsewhere that a smaller capacity usb drive helps (< 2GB) and that it's not SanDisk brand. Worth a shot before you fork over $700!
or, head over to the 5th Gen For Sale to see if this is still available:

Complete entune premium system for sale

I'd call them out on all their social media platforms. It's amazing what companies will do today when confronted on such an open platform.
