A Newb's 86 DLX project :)

I recently purchased this 1986 4Runner DLX to have something to do with free time. I work overseas and out of state a lot, so restoring this will be a slow process. Below are a few pictures of as it sits right now.

I found this yota online about 3 weeks ago when I was in Africa. I called the guy and asked how the vehicle was and he said it was in great shape and perfect mechanical condition. So I told him when I got home I would like to buy it depending on what I see. I got home this past Wed and took a Greyhound bus to Texas to go check it out. The guy I bought this from is located in San Antonio, TX and was asking $5500 for it. After looking at it inside and out, finding some flaws here and there and seeing this truck will need to work. So I started to negotiate with him on the price. I pointed out about the worn/damaged interior, transfer case leaking, exhaust leaking, ect. I was able to drive away with it for $1500 and it made it just fine all the way back to New Orleans, La.

First thing I plan to do is completely remove the interior. After the inside is gutted out, I am going to have it sent to my friend's collision center. Once there, he will remove all the windows, paint both inside and out, then re-install the windows with new window seals/gaskets.

As for the bumpers, not sure yet what i will do with those. I want to try and find a still in great condition factory bumpers.

Not bad for $1500. I agree that interior has gotta go. Same with that front bumper. U might gain some lift back once u lose that pig! Keep those original wheels tho. I powdercoated mine black and put on some 33/10.50 BFGs(see avatar). Good luck!

Thanks guys!

I am leaving back out of town tomorrow for work. When I get back, the fun will really start with this 4 Runner. I have found some people who has some interior parts for it, but my buddy thats going to paint it told me to hold off and let him try his contacts first. So while I am gone the next 2 or 3 weeks, I am going to have the transfer case leak and exhaust leak fixed. Then once home, will start to remove the complete interior.

Nice. What color are you going with ?

The original color was blue, so I am going back with blue. Try to keep it as close to factory as I possibly can. There are a few things I plan on changing though. Going to have a custom roof/safari rack made that will mount on the removable shell. Also looking at having a custom center console done all in 1 piece.

I wish they put the clock in that spot on the 2nd gens, I can never see mine.

Is that an XD on the floor?

Are there two door handles on the passenger door?

Yes there are 2 door handles on the passenger door. I wondered why until one day I was working in the back seat and my son shut the door on me.
