ABS Disable on older 3rd gens

My 1st 3rd gen didn't have ABS which was all fine and dandy. But when i got my 97, it has ABS and i hated it in the snow and when i was wheeling so i figured out how to disable it with a switch so i could still use it when i wanted. A few people have asked me to do a writeup so here we go.

This is very similar to the Andy/Bagel mod for the 01-02's with TRAC and VSC. Basically what is happening is you are interrupting the signal from the ABS computer to ABS actuator which causes a fault and shuts down the ABS system

1. Locate the wire harness on the ABS actuator which is behind the airbox.

2. Cut the gray/red wire and crimp a wire to either end of it

3. Run the wires inside through the firewall and connect them to your switch. I used a normally closed push button which means the terminals on the back are always connected until i push the button and then it breaks the connection. Any switch will work though. I just used this one because ABS automatically reenables when i restart the truck.

4. Mount the switch and you are all set. Here is a video of it in action



There is probably a way to make it so you could do On/Off on the fly. But i am to lazy to figure out how to do it.

AFAIK, doing this mod has no negative effect on the ABS system or anything else. i have been using it for the past 10 months with no problems

I push 2 buttons that say diff lock and I have ABS disabled.

well here is my best shot at explaining what i did:


Well first off here is the fuse box of my 97. Notice on the top it shows an ABS fuse. Thats what you will be working with.

next. here is a picture of the fuses. Notice the yellow and green wires. Those are for my abs disable.

This picture it really up close so it is hard to show what i did. THE ABS FUSE ACTUALLY IS HELD IN BY 2 Small bolts. and on each bolt holding the fuse in also connects the wires to the fuse. So what i did is unbolt one side, then connect that wire to one of my wires using a small bolt and nut (that way you do not cut any stock wires and it can be turned back to stock easily) next run that wire to a switch. Run a wire back to the fuse box. and then bolt it to the fuse.

Here is a pic of the switch i used. its the one on the left. Its a toyota fog light switch unlighted. Its perfect because it is a 2 prong switch. so you have the wire coming from the abs wire, and the wire going to the abs fuse.

I know its hard to follow, but go look at you fuse box and you should be ale to understand what i did. sent me a pm if you need help

So just to be clear on this...
The button you're using is a just a momentary pushbutton, correct? And once the circuit is interrupted, the computer disables the ABS until the ignition is turned off and on again?

Might be worth mentioning what gauge wire you used in the above write-up. Will make things easier for those doing this and wanting pick up the correct gauge wire before they start pulling things apart.

i use whatever i have laying around. i think it was 12 ga

Thats definitely a way to do it. The only reason why i chose to do my method was because the abs fuse carries all of the current for the abs system. As you saw, it has a 60 amp fuse so there is quite a bit of current and i didn't feel like using a switch on the high current circuit so i choose to cut the low current wire. But it works for you so it probably will work fine either way.

So does anyone have a way to be able to disable/enable on the fly? If you tap the fuse circuit, does it turn back on on the fly, or do you have to restart?

you can disable it whenever, but you have to restart to turn it back on

sooo....
i can just press my e-diff-lock on my '96 and it will disable the abs with out engaging the diff-lock and not damage my diff-lock ?
is this what ppl generaly do ?

Dude I've been on here awhile, but just a looker. I want post what happened to my truck because of abs. But I can't seem to find how to post let alone do pictures. I've read all your stuff and know you know what's up. I'm forever truckless and very lucky to be alive, abs nearly killed me on a gravel road Sunday may 31st 2015. Please help me post a story and photos. This is supperrr critical. Thank you man. Keith angle
