Abysmal Gas Mileage

FWIW, I have a 2012 TE with almost exactly the same mileage as you. It is still completely stock with the Dunlop tires and standard roof rack. My commute is ~30 miles round trip, but I have a couple of different route options. If I take the mostly freeway route, I seem to average around 18-19 mpg @ 65-70 mph. If I take the mostly city street route, I seem to get 16-17 mpg. Since I usually take freeway to work and city streets home, I end up right in the middle @ 17-18 mpg. I have one big hill to climb regardless of the route I take, so that probably impacts mileage a bit. Haven't been able to sniff 20 mpg yet, but I also haven't taken any long road trips. I reset the gauge whenever I fill up.

I noticed the milage counter on the dash and what you actually get don't match up, I just took a trip to Maryland this weekend, with speeds averaging between 65 and 75 miles per hour utilizing the "crude control" (haha) about 98% of the time. when I left there to come back the dash was telling me I was going to get 310 for the tank so I reset my trip meter I actually got close to 380 with continuously checking back and fourth (for example I checked it when it said I was at 210 miles til empty and I had gone a 150 miles) and there were a lot of hills with some mountains, and thats with Billsteins set at 2.5 and General Grabber AT2's. I didn't think that was too bad. Oh and I have just over 17,000 miles on mine.

2011 SR5 all stock except bug deflector. 2400 miles. I consistently get 12.9 if all city driving and 16.8 on the highway. I drive pretty conservative in the city with no leadfoot driving, and on highway I run about 77 to 80mph. I am dissapointed with the gas mileage but love the 4runner and am not going to worry too much. I bought this vehicle because I liked it so well, and realize if gas mileage was really important, I would have ended up with a much smaller vehicle.

PS: I compared calculated gas mileage with the dash counter and found it to be surprisingly accurate. I did this with 1st 4 or 5 tankfulls and decided to quit because I now trust the mpg shown on the display. I realize if you reset it often, it will give you more of a snapshot of what the latest mpg has been.

I feel the same about the 4runner - I love it and don't really mind - I just wanted to make sure I wasn't alone and that there wasn't something wrong with mine in particular. I'm ordering a Gobi Rack this week, so I'll report back after I replace my Yakima.

For those interested ... for an experiment I was going on a 100+ mile highway trip today so I took my Yakima rack off just to see if it would make a difference.

I drove normally, filled up before I hit the highway, and reset the avg mpg.

I don't know if I was in a tailwind, or if the government secretly installed something in my rack that makes a huge difference in gas mileage but I went from 16.5 mpg - to 20.5 today! Mind you, I have NEVER seen 20 - ever - and I got 20.5 consistently there and back even on my General Grabber LT tires :wow2: ... I'm leaving it off for a while until my Gobi arrives in a few weeks - we'll see how it goes.

I never did expect save money on gas when I bought the 4runner. So I'm not disappointed. I must say it really surprise me when people proclaim 20+ miles to the gallon average. I never did average anything above ~17.5 mpg over the last 33k.

Yeah, I didn't expect it to be a Prius, but my initial concern was that there was something wrong with mine because it was so bad. I'm not sure why I was getting so low (13 avg on the highway) but it went up to 16.5 after the first 1k miles ... and now without the Yakima and with the General Grabbers I managed 20.5 today avg ... kinda nuts on the variation considering I haven't altered my driving.

I find it interesting that right from the factory with a fill from the dealer I was getting 12.3 l/100k (19.2 mpg).

This dropped off right away and I headed toward 16. My fills to date are :

I was reading that ethanol may result in lower gas mileage so I switched to premium fuel as that's the only one without the 10% ethanol here and my mileage has been increasing over the last 2 fills.

NOTE : The l/100k were calculated by Gas Cubby app for the iPhone, the mpg were converted from that.

There are a number of factors including winter gas and a cold snap of about a week around the time I was getting 18 l/100k but since the change in gas my in dash mileage indicator has been showing around 13.8-14.1 versus 15.8 before.

My driving hasn't really changed at all except for getting Duratracs installed about a month ago. It's mainly city driving (60 km/h).

I would expect another increase in mileage once summer gas is shipping.

Two Things:
1. Read my link on winter gas posted earlier in this thread.
2. Those Duratracs will knock down your milage 1-2 mpg from stock. They are heavier and adding unsprung weight is not good for efficiency.

Mileage

Just drove 411 miles on one tank. Had 18 miles left on the meter. Totally stock SR5 4x4. I think 20.7 was the MPG for the whole trip. This was with Premium gas bought in Weatherford, Oklahoma, and the station claimed there was no ethanol in their fuel........ I did average at least 75 mph the whole trip.

Completely stock I managed to get around 21MPG combined and up to 23 on longer highway trips. Since putting the lift, 285s, and bumper on I'm getting around 17.5 day to day and actually managed to hit 20 this past weekend in the mountains on the highway.

Even with all the wind we have been having and winter fuel not bad.

I average 17-18 this time of year excluding out of town adventures.
