Ac delay after starting.

I can't find anything on the forum about this issue using the search, so here it goes.

Our 2016 t4r sr5p started having a delay for the ac to kick on. Sometimes it's 10 sec sometimes it's a minute. It just seems weird. I hate to bring it to the dealer if its something simple and it will be a wile before it goes in for the 10k mile service.

Haven't heard of that one. Do you start the car with the AC on? Shouldn't matter, but I always start the car first then turn it on. Old school, I know.

I don't know what your parking situation is but this is just a thought... If by chance you're parking the vehicle in a garage or an area that's cool at night and in the morning, the automatic Temp controlled HVAC system has a processor which; after measuring the cabin temp and calculating how far off the target/set-point is... evaluates whether the ambient air temperature is cool enough to cool the cabin without using mechanical cooling e.g. compressor, refrigerant, evaporator... After it's done with it's evaluation, then it'll choose what method (free cooling outdoor air or mechanical cooling) will be the most effective in adjusting the cabin temperature to your set-point.

This may (or may not) explain what you describe as 'a delay'. If you feel that the vehicle is being kept cool until you head out the door, you can try this: try warming up the outdoor air temperature sensor (under the hood in front of the condenser) by holding it in your hand for about 60 seconds BEFORE starting the engine. If the mechanical cooling starts right away, then that was most likely the cause. If not then I guess we'll have to look and see if Toyota added a time delay to that system; mine is a 2012 so it may be somewhat different!

It is my wife's car, I drive a tundra. So she notices all this stuff more than me.

I got in it this afternoon and the fan took about 30 seconds to start blowing. I didn't notice the compressor if it was on or not.

It's 95 degrees here and no garage just a carport cover. So I don't think the outdoor air temp sensor is the culprit. It also does not have the auto temperature control just the old school knobs. And the ac stays on all the time down here in Louisiana so turning it off every day would be something to get used to. I don't have the problem in my truck or any other vehicle we have had. It only has 7k miles, so warranty will cover everything. I'm just wanting to save a trip to the dealer if it's something easy and common. But it doesn't appear so.

I'll give y'all an update when I have more info. Thanks again

Haven't noticed it lately but the fan blower would not come on till I adjusted the fan speed or temp. I found it strange but never did anything about it. I have about 14,000 on my 2016.

Our GX 460 does this. I always assumed it was waiting to get air from compressor to the set temperature before it just started blowing hot air into the cabin. I actually think it gets cooler quicker doing this.

Had the exact same issue here, and I never did anything about it. Has not acted up since the last few occurrences last summer when using the A/C. Will watch for it this summer.

2015 with 6,000 miles at the moment.

If you have your phone ready to record @ startup, try to get it recorded so the service tech can actually see that it is happening, in case it can't be duplicated, and you will get more attention when trying to get it fixed...past experience is how I know this!

I don't mean this to be smart-assed, but have you read the OM regarding the A/C? It seems logical that some delay (to the fan) could be built-in, so as to not blow hot air, and if so it could be explained in the OM. Just a thought...

It's starting to get hot in south Alabama, and mine did this once. If I remember I took the fan control to off and back to whatever speed I had it on and it started right away. Just the one time though and we've had several days in high 90's so far.

Hi mrmachinist,

That delay is a practical feature that prevents the hvac system from blowing HOT air in the summer or COLD air in the winter on the riders BEFORE the system is generating a proper discharge air temperature in the cabin based on the control settings on the console. It's working just the way that it was designed to work!

The A/C blower will sometimes delay for 5-30 seconds after I first start the vehicle. If I adjust the fan knob up/down, it will immediately come on. I don’t won’t to return it to the dealer if this is normal, but nothing seems normal about it.

I get this occasionally on my SR5P if I've shut off the truck with the fan speed dial "in between" two of the notches on the dial.

When it starts up and there's no fan, all it takes is a very small push in either direction to find a notch.

Same here - a small push in either direction will do the trick.
Happened to me maybe 10 times in the past two years.
