Usually only after our 4Runner has been sitting for a little while. If the AC is in the on possition while starting the vehicle, it sounds as though it engaes quite hard. Likewise, if the AC is off and we start the engine, wait a minute, then start the AC, it will still make a a fairly loud "THUNK". If we turn off the AC and turn it back on after that, it does not make the noise at all.
