Adding TE gauges to SR5...W/Pics

I said I would do this a year ago and finally got a set of gauges online.

This is my 2013 SR5 I am trying this on. The gauges I bought online are from a 2013 but miles were unknown.

I removed the covers from the clusters because i thought I might want the clear cover on the TE gauges....but then I broke the clear cover puting it on...soooo



the plugs looked the same from what I could tell so I decided to go for it.



My SR5 has 37k on it as you can see in this pic.



at first I was like "how lucky am I, the mileage is the same" but then it dawned on me I was missing a number.




Bottom line. I went through a function check, 4wd, Lo, door, seat belt, tach, speedometer and so on. everything works as it should. So the swap is very simple. My problem is, the mileage is off my a massive margin. I was hoping the new cluster would be a little higher than mine...so when mine hit the same miles I could do the swap.

Anyone know a place that can fix the miles to match my current gauge?

I know some of you may think.... Just run the new cluster if you plan on keeping the 4runner. Problem is, I have the 8-125k warranty and I don't want to do something that would cause Toyota to drop my coverage.

I can't help you on that but maybe you could go to Toyota and get the old ODO mileage documented and the new and they would track the remaining mileage that way....

I did call them just now. I was very straight forward with them and told them that i like the Gauges in my trail editions better than my SR5, so I bought a set of TE gauges for the SR5 and the mileage don't match. I asked if they could reset the mileage to make it accurate.

He said (FWIW I know the guy) to get new gauges you have to buy them from the parts department and order them with the correct mileage. He said the mileage cannot be corrected on used clusters.

So now I wait for someone who has 37k on their out of warranty TE to want to trade for a sub 4k cluster.

Bunch of companies do mileage correction on clusters. Typical cost is $80-100. Type into eBay cluster reprogram you will see they provide this service.

Nothing useful for the OP here, just a couple of rambling observations since I stayed home from work today:

1) Didn't realize the SR5 used to have amber gauges. I actually prefer that look, as it's very nice for night driving. The Optitron cluster on my '14 is nice, too, but I find myself constantly fiddling with the brightness (say, if I'm driving at dusk and switch my lights on, I need it brighter, and then when it gets dark I turn it down). My car has all amber gauges and cabin lights, and it really does help preserve night vision. Thankfully on the T4R the dash illumination dial falls easily to hand is easy to adjust. Also thankfully the damn Nav screen isn't too hard to turn off completely - I hate that thing on at night.

2) I can't believe the truck's mileage is stored in the odometer itself!!! That's crazy. You would think it would be stored in the truck's CAN BUS some place, if not in multiple places.

I'm not confident enough myself to try it on my own. But i picked the cluster up for $175 and if I have to spend another $100 to get the mileage correct, I guess I'm okay with that.

Everyday I am more and more impressed by what some of you guys do to your 4Runners. I'll change out the shocks, brakes, plugs etc.... but some of the electrical wiring guys have done on here is amazing. Toyota really should visit this site and get some ideas. If they integrated into the new models half of the shit that has been done to the 4Runners here, these trucks would be near perfect.

Gauges definitely look better, nice job!
My only thought is what's going to happen when you trade/sell. I'm sure you'll pass on the info but I'd be sure you get in writing that the buyer was informed so they don't later say they weren't. In our state (as far as I know is still this way), the title would need to be stamped that the odometer is not accurate. What this means the potential buyer here is that it could be off 1 mile or 1,000,000 miles. I bought a vehicle with this designation several years ago for BIG discount otherwise I wouldn't have touched it. Just thinking about what this means down the road for you (which I'm sure you've already thought of). Best wishes!!

I have found a compatibility issue with the TE gauges.

I did find a place to take the cluster to have the mileage corrected for $150

BUT

The oil reset is not working. I have tried the regular reset procedure (for my 13 SR5) and it is not working on the new TE gauge cluster.

I have tried it more than a dozen times and even tried the 4th gen reset (thinking perhaps the TE procedure was different some how).

So I am at a loss on this one, not sure what would make that one function not work. I even tried driving it a little to see if anything else came up, but I had nothing.

*Set cluster to trip meter "A"
*Turn truck off
*Turn key to "on" while holding reset button down. do not start truck.
*Hold button down until reset complete.

Yeah exactly, now that you mention it. Seems stupid that it is really, sure on an analog, of course but a digital? You think it would be in the same ECU as the crash/airbag/blackbox/blah blah whatever data.

I think you may be on to something. This could be a LE cluster. I (shame on me) assumed it was a TE.

What are your thoughts on recreating the LE reset on a non smart keyed vehicle.

Would really suck if the OP has to plug the old cluster in just to reset the maintenance light! I was thinking along the same lines. So I plugged the SR5 cluster back in and reset the maint light. BUT when I plugged the TE/LE cluster back in the light was still there. I was expecting it to be since the light is a mileage reminder.

I have a 2015 TE allready. Just got it in July, but I really just wanted nicer gauges in my wife's 4Runner.

I have confirmed that the TE and LE cluster are the same part number.

HOWEVER.

A couple observations worth mention.

This cluster has the following
rear locker icon
A/T P
Auto LDS
What looks to be Crwal Control Icons

This makes me think this was out of a TE. But clearly I'm stumbling my way through life and have no clue what is going on.

Does anyone know if the dealer can clear the maint light with a computer, or is the only reset on the unit itself?

Worth mention. I plugged into my Genisys EVO and attempted to clear codes to see if it would kill the light. NOPE
