ADH8796 4runner Build

I think that waterfall is one of the more photogenic obstacles I've seen on web... It's sweet to watch.

I'm surprised the km2's didn't hook up on that one obstacle! What psi have you been taking them down to with the beadlocks?? Beadlocks are the one thing I should have put a bit more money into when i bought my wheels.

Yeah it makes for some great pics for sure. Yeah you can't tell in the video but that rock is actually really slick from so many people spinning tires on it over the years. If it was like the rock to the left and right of it than I could have walk up it no problem and with a little more skinny pedal I think I could have made it up even with the slick rock.

In the rocks I've been running somewhere between 8-10 PSI any lower and I'd be concerned about hitting my wheels/rings on rocks. With the 17's there isn't just a ton of sidewall with 35's as you know. Back when I ran 315/75/16's I'd run around 12 PSI and never had any issue with blowing beads but it sure is nice to have reassurance of beadlocks. I figure after I SAS and move to 37's I'll probably run around 8 PSI being that I'll have a little more sidewall to work with.

Cool pics and videos. Seeing poser shots and trucks being built up is one thing, but seeing them out on the trail doing their thing, is totally different. Love seeing a build come to fruition and all of the parts/mods function in unison is amazing. Good job.

Regarding the beadlocks, that's interesting. I have no personal experience with them but it's something I'm interested to see. I run my 33's all the way down to 10 psi in the snow - usually 12 in the summer months on the rocks. A few of my buddies run Hutchinson beadlocks and they run down to 3-4 PSI on their 35's. Is there a difference in the way different beadlock manufacturers actually lock the tire to the rim? Or is this more personal preference? I know you said smashing the wheels was a concern, and that does make sense. I'm wondering what Dirtco drops down to with his.... hmmmm.

Yeah Hutchinsons are designed differently. They are a two peace wheel that bolt together. Where as my racelines have a ring that bolts on the face of the wheel pinching the lip to the tire to the wheel.

Honestly I could probably air down to 3-4PSI and be fine but I like having a little more sidewall to play with so 8-10 works pretty well in the rocks for me. Now if I ever got enough snow around here to do some real snow wheeling I'd probably air down to 3 or 4 because I wouldn't care about having the extra sidewall to help protect my rings/wheels from taking shots from rocks.

I know a jeep guy running Hutchinsons on 35's and he airs down around 4 or 5 but he's also running 15" wheels so he has more sidewall to play with.
 
I must have missed what size, width wise rims you are running. I just bought sone 17" racelines and wondered what width you had compaired to what I was getting.
 
New wheels are on. 17x9.5x6on5.5 Raceline Beadlocks. I was able to remove my front wheel spacers and still no rubbing even at full lock.


 
I'm tired if seeing your driveway queen.. get this thing out in the woods already and put some scratches on it :D
 
Those wheels look good! Whats the backspace/offset of them? I'm still getting a bit of a frame rub with mine, but I really don't want to put my spacers back on.

Well I took it out the the weekend of the 12th for 4x4th of July at Byrds adventure center. Mid way through the first day 4 trails in I hear my compressor kick on and just keeps going I knew I had a problem. One of the guys behind me started yelling my gas cap was smoking. I popped the door on the gas cap and was about to crap my self before until I realized it was just the breather tube from my rear diff. Something was wrong with the ARB inside the rear diff but I didn't have any spare parts for it with me so I just said screw it and decided to wheel the rest of the weekend open in the rear and locked up front (even though I knew this would be hard on the front end). Ended up hitting several more trails and ended up busting a front CV have to say I kinda saw it coming but no biggie.

Didn't take much for pictures but here's a couple from the trip and at least one picture of it not sitting in my driveway lol

Thanks man! They are 17x9.5 with 4" Backspacing
 
Alright I guess it's time I actually update this. Over the past couple months I've been thinking more and more about what route I wanted to go when SASing my 4runner. It seems everyone is pretty wrapped up with either using leaf springs (because they are easy) or 3 link (because it's far superior offroad).

After many hours of searching and reading I finally made a decision I'm not going to use leafs because I won't be able to keep it as low as I want and still run high steer (although it would be considerably easy to setup). I also decided I'm not going to run a 3 link setup. I made this decision because I'll be doing this swap in my garage with very basic tools and very little knowledge on setting up a 3 link to make it work correctly. I considered the all pro 3 link setup but most who have traveled down that road have had far more trouble than I cared to experience.

With all that being said I've decided to run a modified ford radius arm setup. It will be very simple to setup and will net me plenty of flex off road while also offering me better road manners than a 3 link setup. I've started to collect parts and hope to start the swap at the end of September or the beginning of October.

My first purchase was a high pinion 5 lug Dana 44 drivers drop with 4.10's out of a ford Bronco. It came with cromo's inner and outer, warn non-premium lockouts, and a detroit electric locker.



Needless to say I had and still have a lot of work to get this axle stripped down, cleaned up, re-geared, and converted to 6 lug outers. First thing was to take it down to the bare minimum and power wash the crap out of it.


And then a few hours with a wire wheel



Now because this was a 5 lug ford axle I had to change everything knuckles out to chevy 6 lug including the outer stub shaft. So I found a plane jane dana44 on craigslist that had flat top knuckles for $100 so I bought it and took what I needed. And then started ordering parts. Still a few parts to order but getting much closer.

-New chromo stub shafts (chevy length)
