Adjustable Bilsteins 5100 - Which one???

Hey guys! I am looking for the correct or near correct adjustable Bilsteins 5100 to be used in the front of my 4Runner. I have 2 scenarios, use the stock coils or get a pair of OME 880's in which case I maybe won't need them. I went to the Bilstein site and there are several models for the adjustable 5100's which differ from each other by their collapsed and extended lengths. Any recommendation for both cases? I just want to get the suspension away from the rubber bump stops. I have a 1999 4Runner, replaced all 4 coils and for my surprise, ride height didn't change much. Got them by part number coming from the VIN of my Runner so I am supposed to be running on taller coils. Who knows what happened. Just want a mild lift to prevent my suspension from hitting the bump stops. I know that's why it rides son harsh, even the bump stops opposite surface is nice and shinny!

Well if you kept with stock coils you wouldn't see a drastic, if any, height difference. And if you are bottoming out to the bump stops that easily then your front shocks are probably totally useless and not slowing down the compression.

Most people use Tundra 5100s, or Tacoma ones which are supposed to be a little softer but have less adjustability locations.
 
If you go with the Tundra 5100s, and put them on the first notch up from stock, you will see about 1.5" of lift.
 
Do you have the specific part number? I can go wit the 2880's OME springs along with the Tundra 5100's right? Just looking for comfort, not actually lift but I'm clear I can not get one without the other.

Well, the truth is I have the pair my Runner brought from the factory, then I got a full set about 3 years ago which is the set it has installed right now. For my surprise, almost no change in ride height nor quality although I put a new set of shocks simultaneously. I remember it riding better years ago but now is like something I can not fix. I can measure them once I get them out to replace the shocks and let you know actual dimensions and if I get another pair of 2880's, I can sell them for a couple of bucks but still don't know the outcome. Actually I have spent a lot of money in shocks and coils trying to get a better ride and the closest I got was when placing 2880's along with the 2906; then is started going sideways on the rear end. Replaced all links bushings with OEM ones, and no success so I went back to the start. Will replace the rear shocks, hopefully that will cure that last symptom. Guess I still have to spend more money on this (Maybe I should call that guy and tell him I'm gonna buy his Tundra T3!). Anyway I'll keep you posted on the coils if you're interested.

Ome 906 rears are the best mod I did to my rig kyb shocks all around. People say good things about the monroe quick struts. These ARE trucks and they will always ride like one...dont forget that they are naturally a tid bit harsh. Hope u find a good option for your rig. If u do pull the 99s keep me in mind

Actually problem is the rear end sideways movement. I have a set of KYB and have that issue, even now with the stock coils all around (but very minor compared to how it amplifies when doing the lift). I can feel it while passing over speed bumps, when it goes down is like it moves at an angle and not straight down, like something is pulling it from the side.

I will replace both sway bars bushings (OEM), maybe all 4 SB links and will do a test by using a pair of Tokico's I have (bought, almost not used, too soft. More money!)

Check the track bar (panhard bar). It's the diagonal member connected to the axle, it controls lateral movement of the axle. The shocks shouldn't affect lateral movement, only vertical along the axis they are mounted.
 
Sad part is panhard bushings are ok, eventhough I got the adjustable one from Sonoran Steel thinking it was an offset issue, no luck at all, wasted money. There is the pan hard in my garage, getting full of dust and occupying some space. :shrug:

It's like a mistery. Is something new to me and noticed the problem after the lift. Tires? I have a set of 18" TRD's, replaced them with a set of 17" with stock tires coming from a 2010 4Runner, same feeling when passing over speed bumps (stock suspension). Will it be axles playing too much? They have this slight play when you pull/push (wheels out).

A total mistery. It was aligned, steering rack bushings are brand new, all 4 links rear bushings brand new, panhard bushings ok (even tested with the Sonoran Steel one, same behavior).

Going nuts with the problem. (Still thinking on that Tundra T3, so much power, the exhaust sound, and the looks of it!) LOL!

The axles shouldn't have any play I don't think... my wheels don't move at all if I push/pull on them. I think that might explain your problem; how to solve it is beyond what I know though.
 
That's what I thought but then saw some threads on the issue and some people saying is normal to have that play. In my case they move a little bit, maybe 1/8" to 3/16" and you notice that after taking out the wheels and drums. You just pull the bare axles.
 
Tundra Bilsteins and OME combo installed and tested. Left original coils (99 "talls")on the front, raised the front shocks coil base 2 notches. Used OME 2906 coils and OME soft shocks on the rear end. There's a heaven to earth difference on how it feels and handles! No more harshness and no more side to side movement on the rear end. Now it feels very stable, runs smoother but firm at the same time and now I feel in control of my Runner. Slight rake, a difference of 1" between front and rear end. KYB's just suck and are useless when doing even a slight lift, no control at all.

Good deal. That pretty much exactly the mild lift I'm going to do to my truck as soon as I can get around to it. Tundra Bilsteins with '99 coils up front, and OME 906's in the back.
