[Advice Needed] 08 4Runner w/Multiple Owners

Hey guys,

I could really use some advice/opinions on a 4Runner that I have been eyeing for a couple of weeks.

I'm currently in Houston, TX which does not have a great 4Runner market, specifically if you're looking for 4WD. So I've broadened my search and found this 08 Runner with a V8 about 3 hours away.

This one basically checks all my boxes but I am kind of concerned that it is listed as having 4 previous owners.

If you were looking to purchase a 4th Gen 4Runner to turn into an off-road rig would you consider this one and if so what would be things you would look for? I'm planning on having a mechanic look over it if I do drive up to look at it.

Thanks for your help!

First thing I would do is pull up the driver and passenger plastic kick panel (they pop right up) and check for water damage. I know it's bad to assume, but Houston just did have some really bad flooding as you know and you can never be sure. But that would give you an idea if carpet has been replaced. Then take it to a mechanic like you said. 4R's are pretty bulletproof and amount of owners isn't an issue. Mine only had two and one of the dump previous owners put stop leak in it and clogged the radiator in turn toasting the engine. So be it 1-4 owners or 8...you never know. Just trust your gut. Good thing is...they are easy to fix and parts are relatively cheap. Cheers and good luck!

The Lansing, MI reference on the car fax is only for about a years time, that would probably not be horrible but it is time in the rust belt, so go over that good, looks like one big indicator is going to be the radiator support.

I really liked this part under owner 3, looks like owner was doing preventative maintenance, which was within the last ~20k.

There are some other things you can do like go to the Toyota.com, mycarfax.com(get free account on both) and Vehiclehistory.com(free) and check the service history using the VIN. I think the linked one is good enough to know where that's at. Looks like the dealership probably has a fair deal on it, I'd say yes do give it a visit given the limited market. But there goes the don't go look at it or you'll end up owning it.

Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate the reassurance that having multiple owners is not necessarily a huge red flag.

I think I will go look at it this weekend and have a mechanic look it over.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.
