aFe cai = CEL = help???

Hi All,

This is my first post - been doing a lot of research, reading, etc on the forum - just wanna say you guys are awesome and there's a load of truly helpful information on here - so thanks! I've always wanted a 4Runner - got a 2010 SR5 Blizzard White - absolutely love the truck - couldn't be happier.

Now to the meat and potatoes - just started my build (nothing terribly special - it will take a while - and once I get a little further along I'll be sure to post some updates) by putting in my aFe CAI (Pro 5R Filter). After some frustration, sweat and grime - I start the truck up and I get my CEL and slip indicator lights staying on. Suggestions/experience please.

I read a lot of people saying that the ECU needs to be reset - just want to make sure this is the correct step. I saw another post that someone said because of the oiled filter they got it messed up their throttle body? Also I wish I would have read the post about the true benefits of CAIs since the 4Rs basically come with a factory CAI  - anyways, I'll live with what I got.

Thanks for the help - looking forward to the adventure of owning a 4Runner! :driving:

If I had to bet, I would say it's probably the MAF sensor unless you did something beyond the scope of the installation instructions. Go to your local auto parts store and ask them to read you the OBD2 codes. They'll plug in a reader and read it for free. There are separate codes for MAF sensor failure and MAF sensor detecting airflow out of spec. It's probably the latter, which just means your new CAI is either not sealed or you didn't re-attach the sensor properly. If it says sensor failure, you may have broken your MAF sensor during installation. If you were careful, it's unlikely you broke the sensor.

If it's sensor related, it's almost certainly an easy fix, but you might have to disassemble your new CAI to figure it out. Most important is to check for obvious oopses then get the OBD2 codes.

EDIT: There's no reason you should be doing an ECU reset for this. I have never once had any reason to do an ECU reset.

Yes, definitely do everything K O mentioned. Also, pick up some electrical contact cleaner. IF the filter is oiled, its possible that the oil is causing the maf sensor to read incorrectly. This would be indicated by the maf out of range error code. Spray the maf sensor all throughout its heating elements with the electrical cleaner and give it another whirl.

Double check all of your vacuum connections behind the maf sensor too.

Yeah - when I saw some saying to reset the ecu, I was pretty iffy.

Update: started the truck up this morning - no CEL or Slip Indicator light. I have a 40 min commute and neither light came on after getting to work. I'll stop by and see if there are any error codes and see what they say. When I reattached the larger hose (not the vacuum hose, but the one to the right of that) the spring clamp seemed a little loose - I was thinking of replacing that today regardless - maybe that might be causing a problem.

Thanks again for the feedback!

You could just pack it up and send it back and get your money. It will give you absolutely no enhancement in anything other than looks.
