Aftermarket HU and speakers with stock JBL Synthesis amp?

I have a 2003 with the 10 speaker JBL Synthesis, and I'm having trouble deciding how to upgrade the stereo. I have been considering new headunit, new sub, separate amp for sub, new speakers in the doors (maybe 3.5s in the tweeter location), disconnecting the center channel and the far rear speakers. Is the stock synthesis amp powerful enough to push some aftermarket 6.5s in the doors? Will the amp have more power for the doors if it is no longer powering the sub? Is the stock amp actually more powerful than an aftermarket HU? I'm having a hard time finding good information about this.

I'm in the same boat. I'm going to upgrade the HU first and see how it sounds then. The thinking is that 1) I'm going to upgrade the HU anyway and 2) with a better source, the speakers might sound better. If it sounds great then fine, I'm done. But if it doesn't then address speakers & amps.
