I dont know how long its been going on. Its leaking on the vent under the steering wheel and in the vents on the center console. is this a known problem? I found some letter that Toyota sent the previous owner saying that the coolant system was faulty in the 96-99 4Runner models and that they would fix it. Do you think thats the issue(coolant system)?

In my 96 the ac comes in on the passenger side underneath the duct work (black box in passenger side footwell), through the evap and back out into the engine bay within an inch of the same spot. It's connected to the vents on the left of the box and goes to the blower motor on the right. I'm having trouble imagining it getting full enough to make it to the center console vents without leaking all over everything first.
Engine coolant (antifreeze) has a distinct smell and leaves an oily film.
Does this happen any specific time??? Do you have a sunroof? Could the windshield be leaking? My windshield leaks so that water gets in through the wiring grommet on the left corner of the driver's firewall (no water where you describe on mine though) and you couldn't tell otherwise- but it only happens when I wash the truck or it rains a lot.
Make sure you let us know what it turns out to be.

Check your coolant level quick. If its the heater core thats leaking you'll want to get that fixed right away.... Or just bypass it like I have done in the past.
Obviously its normal that the AC would be dripping after the condensation. I have no clue on how it would find its way into the cab though

The evaporator core is inside the truck, if the drain line is stopped the box will just fill up and it will eventually leak. x2 on the bypass if it's the heater core, you won't need heat for a little while. The heater core isn't terribel to change in these trucks though.
