I've been lurking for a while and trying to make a decision on a new SUV. I have searched but haven't found info specific to my question. I live in Phoenix so A/C performance is critical. So my questions is: how well does the A/C in the 4runner work, especially for the rear seat passengers (winey kids/wife)? I have a newer Tundra Crew and it takes a while to get the rear passengers cooled down. I'm really looking for more off road ability than the Pilot/Highlander but they both offer true rear A/C. The GX460/LR4 have rear air but are out of my price range.

Adequate at best
I live in Michigan and I think the 4R's AC system is adequate at best. It does have vents in the rear, but without their own controls, it can take a little while to cool the back seats down. Don't get me wrong, it will cool the entire cabin, just not as quickly as other vehicles that have separate rear seat controls.
I do admit that I was a little disappointed with this AC system when compared to the Pilot I traded in. That being said, I have no regrets.
Definitely take a test drive on a hot day and see for yourself.

I live in Las Vegas so I feel you pain when it comes to summer time, although I haven't used the A/C in the summer months yet, we have had a few low 90's and the air to the back does take a little while to get there. If that is on the top of your lists maybe a Pathfinder would be better for the family, they have rear A/C.
I would like to see rear A/C in my runner but I don't have kids, just two huge dogs.
Good idea to test it with the whole family before you buy though.

Are you talking about the 5th gen or other gens? The A/C in my 98 was so
Cold, it would make the vents have little water droplets around the vent, even in the 100+ degree days in Atlanta!

I found the AC in my TE works well in SoCal. No one ever rides in the back except my dog, but it seems to cool him down fine.
But you wont know till you try it out.
There are companies that make additional AC and heaters for your vehicle as well that can add to the factory ac and heater. They can also run independent from the engine being on or not. Espar is one such company.

The AC in my 2011 seems pretty weak but I think the blame lies with the blower fan. At full blast you can barely feel it coming out the vents. Anyone else have this problem?
The AC in my old '02 4Runner was ice cold and blasted so much air you had to point the vents away from you to keep from freezing even on a hot summer day.
