Air Switching Valve

Got a 2005 4Runner SR5 (V8). The Engine light along with the VSC and TRAC lights came on last week. We also notice that when we start the car up cold, it revs up high, makes a rumbling noise for about a second, then seems to smooth out. This does not happen when the engine is warm. Took the car to the dealer. They are 99% sure that is the Air Switching Valve which requires the Air Pump to be replaced since they work together (along with having to take the engine apart to get to the pump). All said, $2500.00 to fix. I told them we would think about it. The car runs fine after the initial cold start. Just wondering if anyone had any other ideas we could try before spending a boat load of money on something that may not fix the problem....
Thanks!

The air pump? The engine itself is basically a giant air pump, I'm not entirely sure what actual part they're referring to...

If you haven't already done so, get the actual diagnostic code read (many shops, or AutoZone etc type places, will read it for free if you don't own a code reader yourself) -- that should help self-diagnose the problem a little better before dropping that kind of cash unnecessarily.

That's what they told me and I looked at the paperwork - Air Switching Valve and Air Pump need replacing. I plan to stop by Autozone tomorrow and get the actual codes.

Got the code - P1441. Definition: Secondary Air injection system switching valve number 2 bank 1 stuck open. Probable Causes: Faulty VSV for Air injection control circuit, Faulty Air Switching valve number 2, or Faulty VSV for Air injection system.

Has anyone faced this before ?? We continue to drive the car and it seems to be running great but we are wondering how long should we let this go ??

Lights are off!

Was waiting to get a reply before doing anything. About 4 days ago, started the 4Runner and the Engine, VSC, and TRAC lights were off and stayed off. Not sure what happen but so glad we did not pay $2500 at this point. We'll see how long they stay off....

Curious

What ever happened with your dash lights? I am having the EXACT same problem with my 2005 Toyota 4Runner Sport Ed. I was told $3k to fix error codes P1441, P1444, and C1201 (which may or may not be related to the first two codes).

So, anyone that would like to continue answering how I can fix this without paying $3k ... it would be greatly appreciated!!

Lights back on

The lights have returned. This time the error codes are P1442 and P1445 (Air Pump Malfunction codes). 4Runner still runs great. I declined the repair due to cost and can't believe that there is not another work around other than taking the engine apart and replacing these parts... and they (toyota dealership) can't promise this will fix the problem. Need to figure out some way to get the computer to stop responding to those codes. Any ideas???

I have the same problem on my 05 t4r v8, my friend has a code reader and it showed us 3 codes DTC 1442, DTC 1445 and P2441. All showing secondary air injection system tbl. Per your experience, what was done in your t4r to fix the tbl.

2005 4 runner with P1441 & P1444 sec. Air inject sys. Value 2 open

Heres a work around, unplug the vac switching valves on the pass. side of the manifold. Then pull the battery terminal to clear the codes. There is no loss of power. In VA. You can pass inspection with a check engine lite. I was just quoted $2700 dollars. The pumps are under the maniford, the pump blades break and the pieces get blown into the valves causing them to get shut open or closed position , causing the faults. The Tundra has the same problem but is covered under warranty because of a higher freq. of the problem. Who designs a system and puts these components under the intake manifold wich takes 4-5 hours to remove and replace. Im wondering if the 4 runner has the same pumps as the Tundra??
I will keep U posted. Mike

Me too

'05 4runner, 8cyl.

Told error codes P-1442, -1445; and told that switching valves are stuck closed, #2 in bank 1 and #2 in bank 2 of the Secondary Air Inspection System. Told it would be $3K, but also that the Tundra 8 cyl had the same problem and that those are being repaired as a defect due to a "warranty enhancement" for the Tundra.

Toyota needs to admit that their is the same defect in the 4Runner and deal with it.

EDIT: Check this out: http://www.tundraheadquarters.com/blog/2010/04/26/tundra-sequoia-air-injection-induction-pump/

Tundra and Sequoia Fixed!

Here's some interesting news for what Toyota has done for owners of other models with this problem.

This program will extend the warranty on air induction pump assemblies and air injection switching valves for the condition described to 10 years from the date of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. These vehicles were previously covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. When the condition is verified, the dealer will replace the air injection pumps and air switching valves in the affected vehicles. Owners of Tundra and Sequoia models covered by this extended warranty will receive an Owner Letter via first class mail with details about the Customer Service Program. There are approximately 477,000 Tundra (2007 to 2010 Model Year) and 57,000 Sequoia (2008 to 2010 Model Year) vehicles covered by this Customer Service Program. Please note that damage incurred by accidents, abuse, vandalism, or similar events are not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty or the Warranty Extension.

In response to reports of air induction pump assemblies and/or air injection switching valves issues on their 2007-2010 Tundra and 2008-2010 Sequoia models, Toyota has decided to increase its warranty on these parts and is even offering a reimbursement if you already had this issue fixed

P2440 problem

Started my 2005 4.7L V8 4-Runner on Monday morning to a series of warning lights displayed. Engine was louder than normal, proceeded to drive it to the local Toyota dealership. Acceleration was very sluggish and could not get above 20mph. Toyota service did a diagnostic check on the truck and pulled a P2440 code. Said they had never pulled this code before for a 4-runner and explained that it was a faulty secondary air intake valve. I was quoted a price of $2,400 in parts and $1,000 in labor to repair. I'm aware of the extended warranty for the same issue of 10yrs/150k miles on the Sequoia/Tundra's with an identical 4.7L V8 engine. Contacted Toyota corp at 1-800-331-4331, option 4, and explained the situation. I was extremely disappointed in the response I received, which basically consisted of there was nothing Toyota would do to stand behind their defective product. I am the original owner of this truck with 125k miles and have very good maintenance records. From what I was told by the service adviser, there was no preventative maintenance that would've avoided this from happening. I've read enough posts about this same issue to convince me that Toyota's problem with their air intake valves goes beyond specific models and should encompass anything with the 4.7L V8, as it appears to be a design problem with their engine. Dependability, excellent customer service, and standing behind their product were sales slogans that were used when I purchased my 4-Runner in 2005. Based on this experience, I will NEVER purchase another Toyota. They really let me down and I'm very disappointed in the stance they are taking with this known problem. I intend on sharing my experience with anyone considering a Toyota vehicle.

The thing is, you either don't issue an extended warranty, or you issue for all of the same engines.
I kinda confused when TOYOTA issued a TSB for V8 owners about rear drive shaft "clunk", but they dont issue it for V6 owners. and now this. I am sorry for what happened to you guys, I have a V8 myself tho. (finger crossed)

I agree, that if they did not issue an extended warranty on the Tundras/Sequoias I would be quiet. I'm sure this problem is also prevalent with our upscale cousin the GX470 and any other vehicle with the 2UZ-FE
