AISIN Manual locking hubs

I'd rather pay for a seal than have to pay someone to get that apart. Do all the parts just go together using "the tool" now, or do they have to be pressed on?

Doesn't matter which way you push the spindle out, the outer seal gets ruined. Taking it apart is easy now. You still need a press to reassemble.

Take the new bearing and press into knuckle. Install Snap ring. Then take spindle and press it on to the bearing that you just pressed into the knuckle. Install the ABS hall sensor and then tighten the lock-nut to 203 ft # and your done.

Pressing in is a lot easier then pulling it apart. All the parts are clean and greased up for easy installation. Plus no crazy jig is required on the press unlike what is required to pull it apart.

Did you try to unplug your front abs sensors to see if your speedo still works?

No... I'm probably going to just go for it here in a couple weeks. If I have to I'll throw a taco speed sensor in to get the speedo going.

I will do a full and thorough write up when the new outer seals get in. Hopefully before Memorial Day weekend.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing to my 2002, so today in the junk yard I found an 87 Toyota pickup with manual hubs - anyone know if these parts will work? I can likely grab the hubs and axles for 50bucks if it will.

Won't work, you need 95-2004 tacoma manual hubs.

Pulling the abs fuse will still allow the speedo to continue to work. I know this for a fact as I have no abs fuse in my rig for the last 5 months

I have a build thread now - just so you can see how easy the conversion is.

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/87516-aisin-manual-locking-hubs.html

The conversion works great! The truck has no vibrations in the steering wheel and it feels like it has more pep. I will let you know about gas mileage.

With the hubs in freewheel, when i hit the AWD button on my transfer case. All the power is transferred to the front diff and just spins. The truck does not drive, it just sits and spins the axle. I put the transfer case into 4hi lock and the center diff locks and the truck drives.

With the hub cap installed. The cap removes easily with a screw driver.

that could be a cool little anti theft set up... most people would never think of that even if they knew 4runners

so wait a minute... this set up just is a straight forward set up(meaning no special machining or parts) and again what year and make vehicle did you get the hub from? i would assume that the warn premium hubs would also work?

It was as straight forward as one can get. No machining of parts or custom parts.

You need the spindle, hub locks, and outer cv joint (I used the whole cv half shaft because they were already together).

You will need a new bearing as the old on gets ruined taking the knuckle apart.

Base model Tacomas from 95.5 to 2004 has the aisin hub lockers.

Aisin Hub lockers are much stringer the the warn hubs.

so the spindle, hubs and outer CVs. now when you say whole haft shaft, do you mean the the whole assembly? as in if you busted a cv and went to buy a replacement at the parts store they will just give you new axle? (every thing from the bolts out?)

The whole half shaft is the outer cv joint, the half shaft, and the inner cv joint. - Just like buying a half shaft from advance or autozone.

Man I really want to do this, but I bought my limited for the AWD capabilities. Maybe in a year or so I will rationalize doing this. Nice work by the way.

I know that it sounds like i went backwards in technology, but in reality, I only used the AWD part in inclement weather. You really can't use the AWD part off road because once one of the front tires is in the air, all the power is transfered to that wheel.

They can forecast inclement weather so I can go ahead and lock my hubs in advance and use the standard ADD to control the front axle. Or I can Lock my hubs for the winter altogether and then freewheel it the rest of the year. I will see in about 6 months.

FYI. When i was testing the hub locker. There was enough parasitic drag in the half shaft that it would not even try to spin with the wheel not locked. When i Locked the hub, I could definitely feel the extra drag and weight of the added stuff to spin.

BTW, Now is the perfect time to add a front lunch box locker.
