AISIN Manual locking hubs

I don't think you went backward at all. I think all 4wd's should have locking hubs. Car manufacturer's could have just told the soccer mom's to leave em locked all the time if they want which would have also left manufacturer's boasting better fuel milage.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the difference. I know for a fact that there is significant drag with all the unnecessary parts turning.
Keep us posted on your milage.

Nice write-up Singtoe.
This gives you the option of locking the hubs and everything, 4wd and AWD, work like stock. Or unlock and you save parts and gas.

I know that it sounds like i went backwards in technology, but in reality, I only used the AWD part in inclement weather. You really can't use the AWD part off road because once one of the front tires is in the air, all the power is transfered to that wheel.

They can forecast inclement weather so I can go ahead and lock my hubs in advance and use the standard ADD to control the front axle. Or I can Lock my hubs for the winter altogether and then freewheel it the rest of the year. I will see in about 6 months.

FYI. When i was testing the hub locker. There was enough parasitic drag in the half shaft that it would not even try to spin with the wheel not locked. When i Locked the hub, I could definitely feel the extra drag and weight of the added stuff to spin.

BTW, Now is the perfect time to add a front lunch box locker.

So you still can keep the AWD capabilities as long as you lock the front hubs? I was under the impression that by doing the manual hubs I would lose the AWD all together. If all you have to do is lock the front when AWD is needed then I'm back on board for this mod in the future.

If they are locked the vehicle works the same a stock.

Curious how doing this will help improve gas mileage? Also curious about how much it improves?

Mike

The front axles and parts of the front diff spins with the stock setup.
The manual hubs unlock those axles and stop that extra drag. The fuel and power gains are minimal from what I hear.
It's a good mod to keep the CV axles from spinning and the wear caused by the spinning, especially when lifted to the max.

Alright, so forgive my lack of knowledge, this is a new area for me..

Are the only new parts I need the manual hub axles and the locking hubs themselves? Or are the spindles and bearings and stuff different too?

I'm working with the seller of these. The lockouts are sold but if I get these axles and find a different set of lockouts, will I be good to go? And yes I have the equipment to do the work myself and am comfortable doing so, just never worked in this area.

Thanks in advance!

Singtoe would it be a pain to make a list of all the parts you would need to complete this mod. I'm interested in doing it, but no idea where to start.

From a junk yard.

The Aisin hub locks (the body, selector and all the bolts and nuts)
Manual locking spindles
Outer cv joints. (You can get reman from NAPA for $55 each Half shaft)

From toyota.
New front wheel bearings ($55 each)

You can get reman axles from NAPA (tacoma w/ manual hubs) for like $55 each.

You need the locking hubs and the manual spindles.

You will need new bearings (the bearings are the same on the locking hubs and stock 4runner hubs) to do the install as the old bearings are destroyed pushing your old spindles out.

To recap - You need the hub locks, the spindles and the cv joint. Simple.

Alright thanks singtoe! Ill just get the axles from napa then, going there anyway for tundra brakes.

bearing at the dealer, no problem.

But those junkyard parts, the hubs and spindles. No junkyards in the state have them from a tacoma.. that I can find. Guess I need to start calling out of state and take a roadtrip or something.

okay i really want to do this now, if im ever in your town singtoe, ammos and beer = help t4r4life with the install? lol

Absolutely. But really, it is quite easy and can be done in a couple hours.

Winter time is coming, I might lock my hubs for the season once the forecast calls for some freezing precipitation.

i just gotta go find some parts now i guess. main reason for doing is so if i snap a cv i can still drive home

I'm going to try and do mine this weekend.I got everything just got to find time, with hunting season here and fishing there isn't much time left in a day.

Priorities............

I'd love to do this swap. Too bad I just replaced both front wheel bearings already. Well, I'll have to wait till they go out!

If you just replaced them, the should come apart with out damage. If they were in there for many years, that is when they are stuck to the hubs and usally break coming apart.

So if I can get my hands on a set of complete manuel locking hubs, and cv's from a 98 tacoma, with out abs, I can take all the parts involved with the abs on my runner, and install them into the tacoma spindles?

Edit: Nevermind, I read over the process again and the parts will need to be taken from the tacoma spindles and installed in my 4runner spindles to maitain my abs

You need to use the 4runner knuckles (spindle) to keep the ABS.
