AISIN Manual locking hubs

Looking back do you wish you'd just gone with an ARB instead, and skipped the manual hubs?

A

An ARB locker?

The two are unrelated. The whole point of the manual lock out hubs are to keep the diff and more importantly CV's from spinning ALL the time. Reducing wear and tear. Also maybe increase fuel mileage and power.

I guess..... I just didn't see the point of going through all that if gears and lockers weren't being added to the mix. Wear is certainly effected, don't notice the power much with stock 4.10's the 4.56's were little peppier and the 4.88' seem to be where its at.

Ok I think you are confused. You don't do anything to the gears when doing the locking hubs. The front diff isn't changed at all through this mod, so no ARB or going to lower gears.

Hey singtoe,

What is the difference in Fuel economy with the manual hubs? Possibly might be doing this mod in the near future.

My city MPG seamed unchanged or barely negligible. Maybe 1/2 to 1 gallon improvement. But my Highway mileage was improved . My last road trip yielded me 21, 21.5, and 22 mpg consistently.

The other thing is that I am not running a diff drop. I am able to preserve my front drive-train (cv joints, boots and spider gears) from wear.

I am also able to exercise my front diff, ADD and transfer case with out having to be off road. Once a month all put it in 4wd and drive around for a couple of miles. It keeps things lubed up, and lets my actuators cycle back and forth.

Cool thanks man. I'm def, giong to look into now. When I do drive it I mostly do drive on the hwy. I will have to take it and get everything pressed out by a machine shop since I don't have a big press.

I finally got mine done..I decided I wanted to keep ABS so I put everything in my Runner spindles....

Ok… I'm laid up with a bulged disc in my back right now. When it gets better, this is first on my list. I've had the parts laying around long enough. Should be plug and play since I'm ditching the ABS I hate so much.

so what is involved with stuffing these into the 4runner spindles? what do i need cause i want to do this. probably just go buy all new parts from toyota -wheel bearings and all. how hard is it to do this while still using the ABS?

Hey I got a question. I called about getting the parts for the conversion today at the junk yard I get all my parts from and the guy said he does them all the time and he just bolts everything in. He doesn't try and switch out the bearings and everything. He just takes the entire assembly (hub, knuckle, and arm) and bolts it directly into our rigs. Is he full of it or is it possible?

If he has the assembly from a 95.5 -2000 Tacoma you can just swap everything over. If you want to keep ABS you have to use your spindles off of you runner. I don't think the Tacomas with manual hubs had ABS.( Singtoe may have more info. on that,I'm not 100% sure).

If you swap over you will need new bearings and the manual hub, the ADD hub will not be used. You will also need manual CV's and manual hub lockouts. If you are careful you can reuse the seals and the big clips (the clips hold the bearing in, they are between the manual hub and the front face of the bearing. You will install your ABS ring and the the nut. You are done...

john i might have you help me with this when its my turn, as you will have done this and know what to do and how to do it. i know its probably super simple but yeah right now i feel super lazy lol

So I am going to just bolt the tacoma hub and spindle assembly up and just ditch my ABS. Should I just pull out the entire ABS assembly or just hang the unused sensors up and out of the way?

Unplug it and remove all together.

i got your txt message you lucky bas****, lol, nice job buddy!!!!! would have responded by the touchscreen on my phone is fubar'd getting a new phone today, lol

let me know how they work out for you and if you see any bump n mpg's...i'm not expecting much, but a little something would be nice to hear

Lol that sucks.

Yeah I am hoping to get a little bit. But I won't know for sure if it is the hubs giving my good gas mileage since I just put the new engine in there.\

Here are a few photos for everyone to see. I painted the inside of the hub where it says aisin with a bit of red paint cuz it was pretty rough looking.

Ive been reading about doing this mod and supposedly the manual cv's are more heavy duty and you can run a dropbracket lift without the drop bracket, is this nonsense or what?

yes, this is nonsense.

At best, you can have a lift with no diff drop.
