Thinking about doing the swap...how hard is it? Is it REALLY worth it? MPG gain? If its a good idea, what hubs are compatible with a 94 SR5? Any insight is appreciated.

Autohubs are problematic, and don't give you 4WD in reverse, plus you have to stop to shift from 2-4WD.

Manual hubs are more reliable, always have 4WD when engaged (in addition to the transfer case) and allow you to "shift-on-the-fly" in and out of 4WD when engaged.

I did the swap about 3 years back, and was very happy with it.

I did find out that the used set I bought were missing parts, and 3 years later a mechanic was astonished that my wheels never fell off... But it was still a good move.

Yes. Though if they are locked forward, and you shift to reverse, they will have to unlock first and then lock in reverse. This takes a significant rotation of the front axle to accomplish, and it makes some maneuvers not work so well, like rocking the car to get unstuck in mud or snow.

Manual hubs are definitely the way to go, they are more reliable, stronger, more driveable. And with auto locking hubs you don't get to do the ritual of getting to the trailhead, getting out and locking your manual hubs, standing back and looking at your truck and the terrain and thinking "what a great day to be doing this". :)

Just did mine. It took less than an hour. Probably would have been faster if the damn cone washers wanted to cooperate. My hammer finally convinced them too though. I did a fill up and didn't notice any mpg gains yet. At the very least, they look awesome.

What? Defiantly not. The HUBS are ALWAYS locked on the ADD system because they use drive flanges. The part that unlocks is a slide collar on the drivers side of the diff. Thats why "auto hubs" is the wrong term. Once the ADD is in the "locked" position, you will have it in forward and reverse all the time. It does not unlock to change directions.

Dude, we're not talking about ADD. We're talking about automatic locking hubs.

If you look at buzzies sig, he has a 95. Which is the ADD not the auto hubs.

But I see that you were answering Subtegral, who has a 1st gen.

My bad.

I guess where i am still in the dark a bit is why do the swap..aside from them
'looking" awesome. What is the true advantage? What does "ADD" stand for anyway?
 
ADD is Automatic Differential Disconnect. It says it in the link posted above.

The advantage is to be able to disconnect the wheels from the CVs, saving CV life/drive train wear and improving fuel economy.
 
I have the warn hubs on my runner. I prefer the stockers better. Easier to work on and you dont have to turn the dial as much, and I hear they are stronger.
