ajohnson's 85 build

There's nothing in there you can't do with IFS. He makes it look easy because his truck is smaller than yours and has better clearance angles and better gearing.

EVERYBODY needs a first gen, but you don't need to hold out for the solid axle. :)

well I can't go over a 3inch lift with IFS so there goes any chances of gaining better clearance lol. I can add all the gearing i wan't; however, once I reach my approach angle though I'm done lol.

Lift schmift. Get out that sawzall. :)

An SAC is in the build plans :) just don't have the down time with the truck I need to get it done. I'll need a different daily driver before I can go that route. It will get done one day though. I just look at the money I've put into the truck as it sits now and know I could've already built a dedicated trail rig for the same price. No regrets still happy as all get out with my trucks current abilities just wish I could get into more challenging trails that I'm limited from due to the lack of current clearance.

no worries I'll have a straight axle an clearance soon

I was with two 2nd gen tacomas, one on 36's and one on 33's. The one on 33's drug its belly and axle all over the place and crushed a driveshaft (he carries a spare). The one on 36's has a crawl box, 4.7 gears, stock diff gears w/ ARB's and it does pretty awesome w/ 3" suspension, 1" body lift and hacked fenders.

I've got a buddy drives a 1st gen Taco on 35s. No lift, stock IFS, rear locker. Goes everywhere. He did a really good job tubbing and cutting to make 'em fit though.

I know all about dragging the belly lol one rock this last weekend bumped my gas gauge up a quarter of a tank lol. One thing i've found between the tacoma's and the 4r's is the wheel base difference. the tacomas being longer helps in some spots where a short wheel base will pick up a front tire but hurts on high center obstacles, the 4r seems to pick up tires more so however does better on high center obstacles.

They also make a bracket lift for the taco's to get a total 6" suspension lift. However I've heard the bracket lifts for the FJ's and Taco's can break easily in off-road conditions.

I just want some dayna 44's or 60's front and rear 3 linked with dual t-cases and I'd be set with some custom coil-overs on all 4 corners. (dreaming)

Your best bet imo is getting a good 3" suspension w/ extended travel coilovers, uni-ball UCA's, 1" body lift, and cut and pound the fenderwells for 35's. It would be well worth it and you could almost keep up with a SA rig if you are locked f/r.

BTW, my Yukon Zip locker was awesome. It was nice being able to turn with ease again but lock up when needed.

I'm running a 3.5" extended travel suspension lift, 1.25 BL, locked front and rear with ARB's and 4.56 gears, running 33's. I've had my fun with IFS I'm ready for a straight axle full on trail rig. I'll either get another DD and convert the 4r I have or purchase something else to overhaul into a trail rig for less money.

Thats a good setup, all it needs is is dirty fives until you SAS

Works for me... and my internet sucks

hmm thats weird.

Well a small update anyway. My alternator hates life now during night wheeling so I want to upgrade. I bought a Toyota-Gm alternator bracked from Addicted Offroad, and ordered a little something else from Addicted while I was at it.

I have a Powermaster 100 amp GM 12si alternator on the way from Summit Racing, and a GM harness coming from Napa. I'm going to splice the GM harness into the Toyota 3 wire connection, leaving one wire unused. I'm going to upgrade the battery charge wire to 4 guage with an inline fuse, and probably replace the battery-stock fuse block wire while I am at it.

I finally did my tax return so I decided to order some more goodies; Addicted Offroad front bumper, 4xinnovations tube doors, and Roundeyes H4 headlights to replace the sealed beams.

You're gonna love the lights. I used the IPF buckets instead of Roundeyes, but either way the H4 is such a huge improvement over the sealed beams.
