Akebono ProACT Ceramic vs Factory OEM Break Pads

I’ve heard many good things about the Akebono break pads. Even the Car Care Nut guy gives them a thumbs up. Have any of you used these on your 4Runner? What are your thoughts?

For clarification I’m not looking for high performance brakes pads. I’m curious if the Akebono provides better breaking but still has a similar performance as the factory OEM brake pads.

One thing I can say about my current rear pads (the cheaper version Toyota sells) are down to about 15% and the rotors still feel smooth.

I have not done a back to back comparison but in my somewhat limited experience I have preferred the Wagner OEX ceramic brake pads over the Akebono ceramic pads.

OEX 976 front and OEX 606 rear.

The OEX has a good initial bit when cold, stopping power is great and consistent across all of the regular driving scenarios.

The Ackebono have poor initial bit, especially when cold.

Each have low dust as you would expect with a ceramic pad.

Thanks for that info! Out of curiosity do your rotors wear down smoothly or do groves form.

Very satisfied with my akebono ceramics after 20k kms. Better stoping power than OEM and no dust. Have not tried other ceramics pads

i liked the akebono pads (also liked them on my f250). however i warped the rotors recently so just went with whatever autozone stuff they had in stock.

I have ran OEM and Akebono pads. Comparing the two, Akebono pads have better pedal feel but I would agree initial cold bite is lacking. I mainly switched to something other than OEM because I was wanting better initial bite. I feel like there is a lot of pedal travel before OEM pads bite. I experienced low dust with both pads.

Akebono ceramic pads.

I have them on my hemi grand cherokee WK. They stop good and don't seem to wear as fast as regular semi-metallic pads. Low dust on the wheels too.

In my experience they do not "warp" the rotors like OEM pads do. Which is the original reason I switched to them. No matter how easy I tried to be on OEM pads I would end up with "warped" rotors after 30k miles or so. I have not had any "warped" rotors with the Akebono ProACT pads.

Stopping power feels a little better and rotors are wearing smooth with no grooves.

lol i warped mine with akebono pads. And put grooves in. more about how hard you are on them IMO.

No doubt. I'm not hard on my brakes but I don't baby them either. In my case warping was inevitable with OEM pads but it hasn't happened with Akebono pads.

The best combo I have found is Centric rotors with Akebono pads.

I like them as well, dust is NIL and bite and feel improved over OEM. Put them on front , reused oem rotors, no complaints whatsoever.
+1 would use em again no prolema
