I learned that VIN#'s that start with JT are built in Japan while VIN# that start with numbers are made in the USA. My 2010 Trail starts with JT. I was curious if thats the case for all the 5th gens.
All 5th Gens made in Japan?

My 2013 starts with JT and I believe that the TR4 is made in Japan always for Toyota but I am not the expert here so someone else might now better then me.

1st letter of vin is country of origin.
1,4 or 5 is US
2-Canada
3-Mexico
J-Japan
K-Korea
S-England
W-Germany
Y-Sweden or Finland

T=Toyota (other is N=NUMMI, aka usa joint venture with toyota)
position 11 is a plant number 0-9 in japan.
most likely it will be the Tahara plant number if i remember correctly, which is the main plant that most lexus are built at, LS, GS, IS, GX, LC, Rav4.
when we bought our last rav4 v6, it was made in japan, which didnt have as many recalls as the usa made one.

Supposedly 4Runners for North America are made both at the Tahara plant along side the Lexus GX460 and LC Prado and also at the Hino motors truck plant in Japan where the FJ's are made. Some are made in Brazil too but my guess would be the ones for South and Central America.

Don't know the breakdown of which model is made where though and the 11th letter in the VIN is a K on them all over here and just means " Japanese plant" and doesn't specify which plant in Japan .I could make an educated guess though of "like models" to FJ's that are definitely made at Hino but Toyota and Hino are pretty secretive and don't give out much info.

Part of the intrigue for me is that my TE was purchased in Hawaii so its imported differently than mainland 4Runners apparently. My local dealership could not even access history on it because of it.

Hawaii? Sorry man, unfortunately all 4Runners bound for Hawaii are actually built in the US, with Chinese sourced parts by guys who film themselves getting high on breaks. I would trade in immediately.

Did anyone go to the google earth view and zoom in on the 4runner's. You can clearly see the Cavalry Blue Runner's in the lot waiting to be put on the freighter to the US.
