Were should I live?

My wife and I are in the process of researching where we want to live in the next 6-12 months and would like some honest suggestions and opinions on good areas for what we want. We are visiting Austin, TX in April and Central OR in May. This what we are looking for in our next area:


-Lots of outdoorsy things to do

-quality state/national parks within an hours drive

-within 30-40 mins of a medium sized town/city

-mountain bike trails

-affordable (median home price less that $300,000)

-friendly people

-not near a beach

-Not in a oppressively humid environment in the summer. Heat is OK, heat and 90% humidity is not

-property tax rates are reasonable

-California is out

-Colorado is out

-Anywhere in the Northeast is out (NJ upward)

I'm all too aware of the firearm laws here (just moved here from FL). Unfortunately I don't think some of the recent legislature is very indicative of the people's will. We'll see how that shakes out.

Douglas County, specifically Castle Rock, is firearm friendly. There are other areas too if you check around. The biggest issues I see for now are buying new 30 round mags (though many areas aren't enforcing it), private sales, and watching your mag cap if you go into Denver.

I will say though, CO meets all of your criteria and I wouldn't mind having another gun-friendly resident in the state to vote this year. I suppose Utah would be a close second. Good luck in your search!
 
nh and vt, in your disapproved northeast, are very firearm friendly. they also fit the bill on nearly every other of your listed criteria.

I picked Washington because I loved it when I lived there. Sooo much to do, but if I could have picked a second choice then it would have been Utah.

If you have or are thinking about kids then throw in schooling rankings or homeschooling as well.
 
I've been in all of the places you have listed. I'd say somewhere in southern Utah. Maybe one of the small towns near Cedar City or St. George.
 
Bend and Redmond are great places to live. Low crime rates firearm friendly if you get a concealed weapons permit if you plan to carry but lots of trails for biking hiking and off roading within 20 min of bend some of the legal trails you don't even have to leave city limits. In Oregon you can own anything but ordnance. That's pretty friendly.

Cost of living (Bend particularly) get get a bit tough if you aren't set up correctly,
but I think it's worth the occasional bump to be near so many great activities.
 
Hampton Roads here too.. Retiring from AF. Me and the family are in the same boat. Moving in 5 months. We've decided on Charleston, SC. Great City, trees, Beaches, History, restaurants, national parks. I'm an outdoors type with dirt bikes, jet ski's and boats.

Why is "not near a beach" on the list? If I had to pick one of your places, I'd say Austin if I had to. But with Austin, even though TX doesn't have state tax, the property taxes are crazy. You're nowhere near water, considering Lake Travis is dried up. Austin does have a few trees unlike the rest of Texas. What do you do for a living?

Your comments really are quite ignorant ... to say that Colorado is out because it isn't firearm friendly is ridiculous.

It may be less "firearm friendly" by your standards ... but did you ever stop to think .... WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN ???

Despite some recent laws CO is still one of the most libertarian states in the union on the issue of firearms.

{x} Concealed Carry "will issue" state (vs. CA or IL)
{x} Buy AR-15s
(x} Buy hollow points
{x} Stand your ground
.... etc etc etc etc

I think you described the Puget Sound to a T. Central Oregon is nice, but you're definitely going to be further than 30-40min from a city.

Bend is a city honestly I don't know something that we don't have other than ikea and toys r us
