This has me concerned as well. I've been following these for a bit now, and it seems they have become more and more frequent as of late. The majority that I have seen have been 2004 model year trucks. It might be a good idea to make a sticky and start collecting all of the occurrences. If all of the known failures can be logged, we can get an idea of how bad the problem is and who is likely to be affected.
Some people have had some luck with getting Toyota to cover some of the costs, even with their cars being out of warranty. Perhaps having a case by case list to use as backup can help others when trying to get Toyota involved in their individual cases.
When I bought my truck a year ago, there were less than a hand full of these cases documented across several forums, but now there seem to be more every week. Cataloging these as they occur is needed I think. I say this as a former MR2 Spyder owner. The early model year cars were affected by catalyst getting into the engine and destroying motors. Cases were documented and summarized to learn what model years were affected and led to better response from Toyota as well. With the frequency of these, I think its time to start putting together the statistics.
We need model year, trim, mileage, production date, and final outcomes. The more info we can put together, the more we can help people who will have to deal with this. As of now, anyone with a V6 may be a potential victim and people wont be able to relax a bit until we can learn from the data available. Toyota will not come out and tell anyone anything about who might be affected, so we need to do our own research.
