ALMOST got stuck today!

I was heading down to the lake for a little morning fishing when the fun started. My buddy told me one spot was pretty bad but just to be aggressive and I should be fine. Well, when I got to the bad spot I got on the gas to get up some momentum. Sure enough, smack dab in the middle of it... bam! high center, no traction. GREAT! Looks like I'm stuck. I tried putting some sticks and grass under the tires but no luck. I can't even really rock back and forth. I unhook the trailer to lighten the load and try again. This time theres a little forward movement so I keep rocking back and forth and sure enough it starts to creep and we're in business... Free at last!

Can I just say I hate those sorry stock tires. What was Toyota thinking??? Definitely either BFG or REVO's coming soon!

2 things... Anyone with experience with REVO's in mud?

and Why did Trac control still try to kick in some even with the diff. locked?

Q1: I am pretty happy with my Revos in mud, they are a lot more agressive than people think. Not as good as M/T's but will surprise you. They celan pretty well with a bit of throttle.

Q2: Even if you lock the center diff ATRAC still works, just VSC turns off. ATRAC is your friend in sticky situations aas it allow you to brake the wheel spinnig freely and transfer torque to the wheel with traction on the axle. It works pretty well in mud and sand. It does OK on rocks, but not nearly as good as locker (still gets the job doen most of the time). I have found that ATRAC works at its best when you keep the throttle constant at 2-3k RPM. If you rev to high it doesn't kick in (I suppose to save the riveline), too slwo it doesn't really do that well as I dont think there is enough wheelspin generated for it to eally kick in properly. I found holding the thrittle contant lets the ECU know you want to go forward and it kicks in more agressively and pulls you out. Try it next time and see what it does for you. SO bottom line is that YOU WANT ATRAC TO KICK IN OFFROAD. It is VSC which is your enemy as it cuts the throttle, not ATRAC. VSC turns off with the center diff locked.

All-terrain tires generally don't do well in deep mud...they become glazed donuts just like street tires. So, if you were in deep mud, then don't expect much better performance with either Revos or BFG AT. IF i had to pick one, then i would go with BFG AT because it MAY have SLIGHTLY better mud traction due to wide-spaced shoulder lugs.

Yeah real sticky mud will kill any A/T and a lot of M/T tires. I am however pretty happy with most of he mud I did with my Revos. I first saw them when I was slipping and sliding all over the palce with my Dunlops and guys with Revos were driving like it is dry pavement. SO I got a set and they served me well in the mud I did, obviously I avoid the deep mud bogs as my vehicle is simply not capable f doing it, and the Revos will not work in that. Tehy have surprised me on many occasions though. They clean pretty well.

I'm not really trying to postpad, but I just dont see what Hitman is after, so I guess I'll have to ask him. Or let me rephrase, I did ask him and he remains coy about it.:confused:

Have you ever tried to apply the brakes to help ATRAC transfer power? Would the extra braking help?

I doubt it...because when you press the brake pedal, ATRAC shuts off...so, you don't get any additional benefit. The only time that you should use the two-feet method (one foot on gas and one foot on brake) is when you creep over a big rock/tree trunk slowly.
 
If the electronics are there to help us, thus eliminating the need for the two foot mud method, I think that is fine. The other mud method I like is to wag the front tires back and forth to gain virgin mud to grip. No electronics will replace this method.

We hope ;): Maybe in the 5th Gen there will be a mud terrian setting like on the LR3, just in this case the steering wheel will automatically turn left and right to gain traction. Oh I forgot sonar to detrmine how deep water or mud is and also the consistency. This way it will apply the brakes before you even go in and shut the engine off. Kind of like a.... let me think.....a HORSE. Then we will be going back a few hunderd years :D
