Alternate Rack

Is anyone running a full length FrontRunner Slimline rack that they haven't drilled into the roof on the front? I know I remember reading that someone one here has and I just can't remember who.

Right now I am running my Rhino Rack Mesh bolted straight to the Ruggedized Crossbars, and I have been very happy with that setup as well. I didn't use the U-Bolts. I just used the provided (by Rhino Rack) powder coated plates that the U-Bolts would attach to. I will add pictures to this post once I get a chance.

I am working with jafrush at LFD Off Road to create some extensions for my awning. Their customer service and products has been top notch since day one, and I will continue to give them my business!

I like that. I plan one doing this with a Rola rack when I travel or camp.

Sure. The rack doesn't really interfere with the moon roof. The only issue is if you have a crossbar positioned just so with a wind faring or light bar hanging down, you may not be able to vent. Opening shouldn't interfere at all since the glass goes under the roof.

Pictured is a prototype, the production rack extends another 4-6" further forward.

Do you have a picture of the 3/4 roof rack you could post?

Yinzer, our Crossbars are 2" wide by 1" tall. :)

jafrush , do you know if there are Yakima mounts that are a direct fit to the LFD crossbar? I would love to be able to use all of my collected Yakima racks, baskets and boxes without fabricating mounts...
Thanks! Jason

Your Yakima stuff should fit since the older stuff was designed to fit either Yakima or Thule bars, and the newer stuff is designed to be universal and fit round, square, and aero bars, as well as into T-slot bars. I'd bet you could make their T-slot setup work with the holes in the LFD bars or DIY some 80/20 bars.

I know there are ones that work, but I don't know the specific models. We haven't messed with their mounts ourselves, just know others have used them with success.

So we upgraded from just the 3 ruggedized crossbars to the full 7/8ths rack this past weekend...

And of course we had to test out it’s capacity on the way to the lake!!! It passed the “Rubber Ducky” test with flying colors.

Looks great! Been considering upgrading to the 7/8 from 4 of the bars. Looks like you have a sunroof, have you tried using the tilt on it since installing?

007- Looks great, would love to hear about the tilt functionality as well as noise with tilt and fully open. I really like how your Rhino mesh platform still works after all the iterations you have gone through. Makes me want to get one with 4 crossbars and the LFD cargo stop brackets front and back.

Pictures or it didn't happen! I'd love to get one!

Since we don't have an older Trail (though Id love one!), the only image I have is from a customer who helped out with our prototype set.

Same concept, but we had to add in adjustment for the varying width of the rails.

Yep. Everything works and the sunroof does not touch. Even my wife is super happy with it (and that is a difficult task). She loves the looks, functionality, and the fact that we got to retain our original LFD Off Road Crossbars. [emoji3]

Tested all the Sunroof settings on the way to work this morning. Interstate cruising at 75 MPH. No A/C and No Radio... for science.

*Fully Closed: No Noise

*Shade Open: Very Slight Wind Noise

*Tilt Open: Very Slight Wind Noise + No Backflow of Wind

*Fully Open: Some Wind Noise + Great Venting

The way the rack lines up with the middle of the Sunroof is actually perfect for my wife. Some Sun but not glaring. Plus, the wind fairing does a fantastic job of deflecting air over the sunroof to prevent wind noise! I think I have found the perfect roof rack for us!!!

Is that your Gamiviti (sp) rack? I think you were the one getting one. Post some pictures when mounted. My land cruiser friend has one and it is very nice.

Here you go. I’ve had it loaded up pretty heavy and it has done very well! I did request and receive a bigger fairing which actually touches my roof and that has really cut down on wind noise. I can use my sun roof again no problem. Addition mods done to protect my roof surface; Clear bra, door edge trim.

Does the LFD 3/4 rack stop before the sunroof opening? I am having a really hard time determining how far out it extends? I am looking for a rack exactly like this and think this or the front runner 3/4 are where I am at, but I like the slimmer profile of the LFD.

Ha, no. the 3/4 isn't the best option if you have a sunroof. We made it a little long, and the wind faring will sit close enough to the sunroof when vented that you may get interference.

We're recommending you go 7/8 if you have a sunroof. The wind faring with that one is far enough forward that there's no problem. We have several people running 7/8s with sunroofs.
