Alternator Pulley “Moan”

Hey guys

I have a 1998 limited. My alternator pulled has recently started making a moaning sound. At first I thought it was coming from my power steering pump and it needed flushed anyway, but after I flushed it I could still hear the “moan”.

Alternator is still charging fine and my belts are new. Just as a test I sprayed the pulley with a little WD40 to see if it would go away and it did, went back to quiet running.

Any ideas? My last belt shredded and I found some strands behind the pulley just now, I’m thinking maybe I can remove the pulley and clean behind it. How do you remove the pulley?

TL/DR: I think when my previous belt shredded I got some strands stuck behind the pulley, how do I remove it to check?

You'll have to hold the pulley still while rotating the nut much easier with an impact.
 
Is there an oem pulley available for these? I suspect my tacoma is doing the same.
Try turning off and on some electrical stuff, power windows at their top and see if that also makes that moaning sound?( Pitch change)
Ive replaced my ps pump and flushed the ps system, reservoir and all but still have the low moan. Unless its my rack..
 
Yeah
Pulled the pulley this morning cleaned behind it...
Still make the noise, I did double check the battery while running it’s at 12.9 volts. So maybe the alternator is going out?

Exactly what mine did before it died. I ended up replacing it with a CS144 alternator. Not saying you should (need a good reason to increase the alternator amps) but in my case it was increase amp load that killed my alt.

They can be rebuilt though.

One company has a rebuild kit that has everything but the rectifier assembly.

I had looked at rebuilding it, but every rebuild kit I saw didn't come with a new rectifier. Got a hook up a Napa should be able to get a good deal on their alternator(Looks like the NAPA one is rated at 80 amps vs 70 from the others).

This truck while in pretty good shape has had a lot of "differed" maintenance. I have been trying to do as much as I can while stuck home, but man seems every time I fix one things something else starts going out. Hope I get caught up soon.

It took me some time but I was able to buy a rectifier assembly. It was around 60 dollars I think. My SR5 thread has rebuilding it.

I feel ya man. My engine blew 1 1/2 years ago and I thought I was home free for a long time once I put the new engine in. Dealt with a failed alternator like you are, oil leak, exhaust leak, and now knock sensor shenanigans. I guess it's just part of owning an ageing vehicle.

Yeah, not complaining too much still love the truck. Plus it doesn’t help that being stuck home I keep fiddling with stuff. I need to get to the valve cover gaskets... it just seems so tedious.

Went ahead and just bought a new alternator I’ll put it on this evening.

Mine did the same thing then a few weeks later, poof. It dead. Get ready to swap over to a CS144. Youll be glad you did.
 
I had no warning when my alt went out, but I understand the 5VZ alts have a lifespan of roughly 150k give or take 20k.

Be sure to move the little sleeve out of the way on the top alt bolt - makes installing new alt a piece of cake!
 
New alternator installed today. Went with NAPA, alternator is rated at 80 amps so a little higher than stock. The alternator I removed looks like the original and with it having 269k mile I’m impressed.
