On the highway, battery icon appears. not good. kept driving, stop and go, white knuckles. about 50 miles from home. about 10 miles from home, tach and speedometer zero out, brake and airbag lights appear, some dash lights disappear. yikes. it's night time. about 5 miles from home, headlights fading fast.
reach home. in the driveway, car starts to stall. i open hood, smell electric.

putting a trickle charger on battery. serpentine belt ok (replaced at 200 k, now about 260k). alternator original. figure i will need at least a toyota remanned alternator, and pick up a new belt. anything else at 260k?

I don't mind doing my own work; it will save a few hundred $. Is this a pretty straightforward job?

Find an OEM one on ebay from a dismantler. Id get a factory used over anything aftermarket or reman. You may find one that has more amps as well.

i need to do this as quickly as possible, with this being my only car. i have two toyota dealers within 20 miles, and a NAPA in town. dealer usually orders in parts, so that will take a couple of days. NAPA might have one on the shelf. Hoping i can recharge the battery enough to drive locally in daylight until i get the replacement.

Job finished. A kindly neighbor indispensably drove me around yesterday and today. Yesterday I dropped the Toyota battery at Advanced Auto Parts and left it overnight to be charged. Picked it up this morning reading 12.95 volts. Then drove to the local dealer to pick up the alternator and belt. Probably spent about three hours dismantling and installing. Decided to leave the belt for another day. Might change some of the pulleys.
Could not reattach a second low mounted harness bracket because I couldn't get the bolt seated. It is not a necessary bolt, and I'll save it in the vehicle.

The videos were very helpful to have to refer to.
