Am I crazy? Perfect used tfr

They're out there. I drove 9 hours to pick up an '05 Sport Edition V8 about 18 months ago that had 53,000 miles or so, with complete maintenance records. Paid $17k. Just gotta stay vigilant, and jump when you find the right one.

I looked for a year for my current 2004 V8 limited. And I flew from Michigan to Arizona to get it. Drove Route 66 all the way back. Made a fun trip out of it. No way I was spending my money on a Midwest rust bucket. I still look almost everyday for 4runners. Just because. But I haven't found another one like mine. 1 owner with a maintenance history like no other. Guy was a pilot like me and retired doctor. So his records were unbelievable and detailed as can be. The right one is out there for you. Just gotta be ready to jump on them. They go quick.

So searching today, and checking the Toyota site which is finally working for me again, I found one with a decent price to mileage ratio but toy site revealed they attempted to change their transmission fluid and couldn't figure out how to refill it so they drove it to the dealer (EMPTY) and had them do it - then it was traded in. The next one revealed a dead rat found in the heater core that took apparently multiple attempts to decontaminate. So far today's best find is one where the owner only did oil changes and nothing else with 95k, at least there's still time to prevent major damage on that one....

Keep searching!!! That is ridiculous in regard to a previous 4R owner attempting to do maintenance when he's never done it before. I hope he got ****ed with the trade in because that is just senseless. I'm nowhere an expert on cars but I know enough to avoid certain maintenance tasks that requires technical expertise. I just found my 4R today and bought it so keep searching, you WILL FIND SOMETHING!

But ones not going to fall into your lap. It took me 4 months. Some of the ones id see on CL would be snapped up within a day or two. I had to travel about 2 hours but its worth it.

This...especially in NorCal. I had been looking on and off for a little bit so I could get rid of my 13 Jeep Trailhawk. Everything I looked at that was decent was gone in a weekend. I kinda gave up until one popped up on CL that was exactly like my 2008 I had to give up in 2010, except this one was a V8. I called the guy and said I wanted to come look at it "now". He said he hadn't cleaned it up and I was OK with that. Drove out Tuesday to look at it and test drive it, bought it Wednesday. Guy was a mechanic and had done all the fluids, brakes, etc. Doesn't have any leaks or rust. 2 owner. 152,XXX and paid $16,400 out the door. They hold their value here on the west coast VERY VERY well, especially the bay area. Demographic and all.

So I've been looking for a tfr for a while now, my search is for a 2006+ v6, any wheel drive with good maintenance records for 9-10k, and not black or brown (live in desert). I find something with decent records but they'll want like $14,000 with 170000mi, or find most of the records but never a diff change at the same mileage.



The mileage doesn't bother me too much but missing items does.



So the question is... Am I crazy?

Not crazy... I've searched for mine for a very very long time. You could say I was just done searching and then one popped up and I snatched it lol I would say decent price 2006 sport Ed. V8 4WD for $22k out the door with a warranty. All I wanted was a sunroof and 4wd. I did not want the gold, white, blue or red ext color. Was ok with black, grey or green. I have a Camry that is grey and love the color. My fave color by the way it green. The 4R showed up on Carmax with a distance of 100miles away and free transfer to my location. There were no pictures of it up but color listed was "grey". So I had it shipped over. Then the pictures got uploaded about a day later. Colored seemed alil too dark for grey. Saw it in person was like "that's black?" Got a closer look and saw a dark shade of green and grey mixed and thought "wow pretty cool color, I was ok with grey and here it has green and grey?! Awesome! Where do I sign?!" Lol
Looked up the color and its called "shadow mica". Hard to keep clean but ish ok..

Be patient you'll get lucky I struck gold twice in 3 months, My Wife now has a 2011 Limited 4X4 with 19k miles and i scored a 04 Sport V8 4X4 with 80k yesterday. It happens patience is key though last time I bought it took me an entire year.

Thanks for all the support guys, so far the best one I've come across is the driftwood pearl (mechanically wise), paint had a few scratches.

Agreed. It took me almost 3 months to find a good one that had reasonable mileage, records, no rust, etc.
