It's a free country, as a private citizen fly whatever you want but to the majority of people (other citizens), the confederate flag signifies the south fighting to keep blacks enslaved. As JD pointed out we have people here in Canada flying it even though it's very rare and rural. Fly it if you want but you can't deny it is overwhelmingly a symbol of the south fighting to keep slavery regardless of the flag's variations for a great percentage of all of your/our citizens.

As for the flag ISIS uses, I hope they all fly it so we know exactly who they are and what they symbolize.

On the contrary, this off road truck forum is proof you can deny it as a symbol of slavery. With dog whistle racism in decline, those of the soon the be minority are grasping at anything they can to maintain their false sense of superiority.

I actually see both sides of the coin on this one. I agree that not everyone who sees a confederate flag is instantly going to think that. But I also agree that the overall perception of it is very strong. And not just to slavery, but to segregation as well. Georgia integrated the battle flag onto its state flag because the state, "was in a desperate situation to preserve segregation." So, for some living today, it has a direct correlation. I guess to me, it begs the question "Why would you want to fly the flag knowing some of its history has such strong racial connotations?"

Now, do I think it's absolutely ridiculous that one of the reactions was to yank Dukes of Hazzard off the air because the General Lee has the flag on its roof? You bet.

Like others have mentioned, the swastika in many cultures/religions has a very positive meaning. But put it on its end and wrap it with a white circle and a red square and you've got a whole different ballgame.

Most people in the south did own slaves because they couldn't afford them. But plantations owners had massive amounts of them.

Should China be ashamed of waving their flag? Mao went through and slaughtered whole villages (millions and millions of people) because they were political dissidents.

Russia? Road of bones should speak for it's self. Once again people who disagreed with the government. They also had slaves. The didn't import slaves like most of the rest of the world but enslaved their own people.

To say that one flag shouldn't be flown because of the "history" it has is very close minded. Now if you are saying all countries that have had slavery should fly their flag. While I may disagree with you at least your being consistent and I respect your choice. Even if I disagree with it.

I'm not a huge historian, but a couple things about the Civil War stick in my head.

1) It seems to often be portrayed as a moral mission by the north to free the slaves. It's more logical the fight was about power and control; ending slavery was a way for the north to decimate the southern economy and prevent it from quickly recovering and becoming a threat again.

2) If I'm wrong, and all those northern white people fought to save the slaves from their evil captors, then why 150 years later has equality not been achieved? In war, the victor controls the society. Why did they not immediately dictate (by force if necessary) that all men would be treated equal from that point on? It would be one thing if racism and discrimination only existed in 11 southern states, but that isn't the case is it?

The flags of countries like China and Russia at the time of the road of bones. And even England to some extent. Was a direct representative of their ruling class.
The people in China didn't have a say in Mao's actions. Same was true with Russia. England had some what of a representative government. But with the people only having 1/3 of the representative influence. Their influence was greatly limited.

But as [MENTION=113024]Jernik[/MENTION] said so well, the Confederate States no longer exist. If the confederate flag had a deep and rich history beyond what may have been a blip in the overall radar, I could see still flying it.

To counterpoint, there are examples of flags that do no longer exist despite their country continuing to do so. Take the Rising Sun flag of Japan. And the Russian flag is no longer one that represents the USSR of old. China has also changed their flag. The hammer and sickle has been replaced. The German flag under Nazi rule was different from the flag of today and before that time.

To add. I feel like it's not the fact of flying a flag, but to fly a flag that represents a very specific historical point. I would have no issues flying the Japanese flag. I am Japanese. But I would know to never fly the Rising Sun version of it. Same as with the Chinese Hammer and sickle, the USSR flag, etc etc.

It seems pretty simple to me. The only reason you could justifiable give me to fly the Confederate flag is that you are from the South and proud of it. But why couldn't you just adopt a new Southern flag that represents that and only that?
