Thanks for clarifying. Threatening a ban on something so subjective and vague as "silly" was sure confusing.
Did you also tell them that they would most likely get pulled over/stopped more often and "questioned" because of profiling even though they were likely minding there own business and not committing any crime thereby increasing their exposure to having their civil rights put to the test?

I told the son (daughter is a girl...) that, since people, especially guys, have a disproportionate number of accidents and speeding tickets before age 25 that he would be targeted and scrutinized much more than his sister, mom or me all put together. I told him that at 16 and remind him of it all the time. I also told him that if he were stopped (told daughter this too) by the police for ANYTHING while they were driving that they should stop, roll down ALL the windows, turn on ALL interior lights and put both hands on the wheel. That way the LEO has one less thing to worry about as they approach the car.
I have been stopped a few times (headlight, tail light) and I do the same thing. I told them to put themselves in the policeman's shoes - maybe dark rainy night and tinted rear windows, maybe there was an APB for a vehicle similar to theirs. Make it easy on the police and take away at least one fear they have and that is someone with a weapon hiding in the back seat or even the driver or passenger holding a weapon just waiting for the police to get to the door.

I did what I thought was needed. I should think any responsible parent would do the same.

This likely won't occur outside a traffic stop. It could but 80% of the time your pulled over its because you did something wrong. You will on occasion meet the police outside of a traffic stop but that's a much smaller percentage and your probably doing something to get their attention. And on a traffic stop if you didn't do anything wrong there is probably something wrong with your car anyways. Tinted windows, cracked windshield/glass/mirror, no/too short mud flaps, tires stick out too far, tires too small, not enough tread, tinted tail lights, did you drift back and forth in the lane, did you have your turn single on long enough or too long before changing lanes. If you actually know what the laws of the road are you realize most of the cars today have at least one thing wrong with them. Then at night when your phone lights up and you look at it and your face is reflecting the light off the phone that could be a stop for hands free rules. There is always something. I got stopped for a safety inspection more than once. The suburban was 3 different colors, and in the process of a small restore. It was a BS stop but I was told by my dad that ultimately the police will win in the street and you have to fight in court. I was 16 at the time.
After the 2nd time I contacted a lawyer and he said unless they don't issue a certificate of passing or failing for the inspection it's legal. On the 3rd one I asked for my certificate of passing or failing (politely) and that was the last one.

Great advice for your kids.
For myself, I also add: ignition off, no sudden movements and hands clearly visible.
My job is to put them at ease and find out why I was pulled over. If I dont agree with the ticket I am issued or my civil rights were violated, I'll deal with it in court.
And this would and is shaped by your life experiences. That is the point that you and I are both making.
EDIT:And I should also point out that you "thanked" a post above that included "silly" name calling or a "thinly veiled insult".

So because you are not perfect you continue to empower certain posters against a poster with a different point of view and also moderate this forum by allowing name calling to go on? I would say that you are encouraging a form of suppressing an opinion that you do not like. This is exactly why I started posting in this "Off Topic" forum.
