Amsoil Full Flow & Bypass install.

Not to be an ass, but I am a pharmacist. I do unit conversions for a living. Trust me 4 quarts = 1 gallon.

I was thinking/typing out loud, I believe you;): never meant to doubt you:)

It took me about 8 or 9 quarts to fill up. I had to let the engine run for a few minutes before I got an accurate read though and was over the mark. I would say that 8.5 would have done it, but a little over is better than a little under.

Quart[er] gallon. Therefore... 4 quarts to a gallon.

And I thought we Americans were only oblivious to the metric system.

it's those damn 5 quart containers they sell in the autozones

With this system installed there are several benefits; you relocate the oil filter location (the OEM filter location on the V8 SUCKS, have drop skid plate). I relocated it right between the front bumper and the radiator. You can reach under the bumper without even lying on the ground. You are replacing the OEM filter with a high quality/capacity Amsoil full flow filter specifically designed for synthetic oil and extended change intervals. It also uses a specially designed by-pass filter that filters to 1/10 of a micron and filters almost all contaminants and water. Basically this system keeps the oil like new for extremely long periods (approx 100K miles with periodic filter changes and oil analysis). The full flow filter gets changed every 12.5K miles ($8.75). The Bypass filter gets changed every 25K ($20.50). When changing the filters you will need to pre-fill the filter before installing and then top off oil level on dipstick (also done on new install).

Let me say that this system is not for everyone. If you are leasing or only keeping your vehicle for several years, there's no need for this system. This system is for someone who is going to keep their vehicle for many years, or will be driving in extreme condition, and/or puts on many miles a year.

Good position for the dual filters Koz. They should even be able to take a small bumper hit without failure.

You are probably already doing this, but for the others here: I would prefill the filters with engine oil before screwing them on. This will avoid the dreaded moment or two of air in the line.

I have already changed my differentials and transfer case to Amsoil. I noticed that engagement of low works faster.

Thanks for the great pics and info.

How many miles on your truck?

This is the BMK-13 system? Which filters does AMSOIL recommend?

AMSOIL recommends the SDF57 filter for normal/non-bypass.

Could you post a parts list? BMK-13, petcock, adapter, filters, anything else?

I had 3K miles on truck when installed.

The BMK-13 Dual remote by-pass kit comes with mostly everything you will need, except tools. They give you a list of needed tools with the instructions. The one tool you will need that is not listed is a right angle drill, as noted in my write up.

The only other part I ordered was the optional Oil Sampling Kit (BK-13). I also ordered extra hose because I didn't know if I would come up short. It turns out the 8 feet hose that comes with the kit was enough.

There are 8 different full flow filters that can be used; I used the SDF-15 (recommended), which is the next to largest. There are 3 different by-pass filters that can be used. I used the BE-90, smallest of the three (recommended). These filters are not included with the kit.

I'm intrigued by this system. From what I've read it is pretty amazing. Even if it is 50% as efficacious as they claim that is pretty good. I have a V6 with the filter in a pretty good location. I am wondering where a good place to put the filter would be. Any ideas for you all with the V6?

You would need a 10"X5"X10" open area for the filter mount and two filters. Also, to avoid having to buy optional 45/90 degree fittings/nipples (that mount on the filter block), you would need to have several inches of open area on one side of the block. So, ideally the total open area would need to be approx 16"X5"X10". The filters can be mounted in any position, but it will get messy when changing the filters. You can mount the filter block up to 8 feet away from the OEM filter location, so you have allot of options.

Hey Koz
how many miles you do a year and how long do you intend to keep the truck, what type of mileage will it have when you look for a new vehicle

did you see the GS on ClubLexus with over 300k;):

I put about 12 to 15K miles a year, but I keep vehicles till I give them to a young family member who is starting to drive. I installed this system knowing I could get 200K+ miles out of this truck by just leaving it stock and changing the oil (any oil) every 5K miles. Again, the main reason for this mod was to relocate the filter. The fringe benefit is that it is probably the best filtration system on the market, today. It also allows for extreme extended change intervals.

stupid question but could 1 put that system in with say M1 or that new 15k mobil synthetic oil

I suppose you could EDGE. I would encourage you to read up on the benifits of AMSOIL. I was a die hard Mobil 1 user , I read ALOT about AMSOIL and deceided to give it a try. Saturday I am changing every oil in my 4R to AMSOIL products. I have not ordered the dual filter kit but I plan add it in the future.

Here is a link for a Mobil 1 vs. AMSOIL test

You could use ANY oil with this system; it would just keep it cleaner longer. Take a good look at this oil and you will see that without the bypass system this oil is rated to last 35,000-mile or one-year intervals, whichever comes first. You also have to look at the other benefits of this oil. I don't think you could find better oil!

It looks like AMSOIL has a 7.5k and 25k.

AMSOIL ATM Up to 25k.

The XL is a 7500-10k oil?

Mobil1 will probably work fine, but you'll have to sample to make sure the 15k stuff will go 25k. In my last car analysis showed Mobil1 was in bad shape at 7.5k (with a filter at 3750). AMSOIL did fine.

My only issue is the 25k AMSOIL lacks API SJ certification. Both are SL. Toyota requires SJ for our warranty.

I've reviewed the SJ and SL info. SL seems superior to SJ. Not that Toyota will care about the API certification if you run oil 25k and have engine problems. I'm not sure how far oil analysis will go with any engine warranty issues.

With synthetic, it would not expect any issues before the warranty expires anyway.

No removing the $%*#$ skidplate is worth the price to me. I could simply relocate the filter. But if I'm going throught the trouble, I'll add the bypass kit, get better filitration, easy samples, and longer oil change intervals. I plan to drive my 4Runner until the wheels fall off.
